Nicki Minaj is the latest celebrity to question COVID-19 vaccines, and she did it the most ridiculous way: publicly on Twitter. Since she is a major celebrity with 22.6 M followers, she received a lot of attention from the scientific community. It started when she tweeted about not getting vaccinated for the Met Gala:
‘They want you to get vaccinated for the Met. if I get vaccinated it won’t for the Met. It’ll be once I feel I’ve done enough research. I’m working on that now. In the meantime my loves, be safe. Wear the mask with 2 strings that grips your head & face. Not that loose one’
Research? she added one specific reason why she didn’t get vaccinated in another tweet:
‘My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen. His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called off the wedding. So just pray on it & make sure you’re comfortable with ur decision, not bullied.’
This triggered a long succession of tweets from epidemiologists, biologists, microbiologists and other scientists who made a more or less successful attempt to convince Minaj: this is probably the most attention the rapper will ever receive from the science world.
‘Chlamydia is a more likely explanation – and may also explain why the relationship ended. While there is unfortunately no licensed vaccine against chlamydia yet, there are vaccines against other STDs, like HBV and HPV. Maybe spread that information instead of misinformation,‘ answered Florian Krammer a professor in microbiology… ‘Nicki, I’d love to talk to you about the COVID vaccine. Impotence is significantly more likely from COVID and there have been no documented cases of impotence associated with the COVID vaccine,‘ tweeted Uché Blackstock, MSNBC medical contributor… ‘Nicki, I made this rap about the vaccine last fall! It talks about the immune system and some of the things that happen with your immune system after u get a vaccine happy to talk more about it with you. My space is always judgement free! much luv,’ tweeted award-winning science educator Dr. Raven the Science Maven, who has written a rap song for every complex problem in biology.
Imagine tweeting about the STD contracted by your cousin’s friend and using it as an excuse for not getting vaccinated? Nicki got very defensive and said she will eventually get vaccinated, but her tweets also triggered another wave of tweets from the vaccine-skeptic crowd. The media were quick to report about it, from political TV shows to other commentators, but again, the most important part of the story is that, with her 22 M of followers, she directly reached 15% of the US population in a simple tweet! What a mess!
