New Study Identifies Vinyl Buyers As Lonely Middle-Aged People

You know how studies are, they never really apply to you, but they do exist and do tell a story for the majority. A new one carried by YouGov has examined the vinyl sale increase and the age and lifestyle of the buyers in the UK, as they wanted to find out who was responsible for this vinyl rebirth.

According to their data, the resurgence of vinyl is due to middle-aged people’s nostalgia: young people do not buy vinyl in mass, their parents do: ‘those that have purchased a vinyl album recently are more likely to be aged between 45-54. By contrast, those in the 18-24 aged group are the least likely.’

Does this surprise you? I am not really surprised, every time I go to Amoeba, the guys browsing the vinyl rows are effectively not the youngest costumers. There is an occasional young guy buying a new release in vinyl, but kids under 20 don’t buy anything physical, it’s well known.

But there are more revelations brought up by this study, not only vinyl is bought by old people, but vinyl is also the central part of their lives. According to the same study, 66% of them ‘say they could not get through day without listening to music, compared to 49% of UK adults in general’. They are true music addicts as 33% of them say they ‘ listen whenever they can’ compared to 25% of people over-18 in general.

At the same time, vinyl buyers are also more likely to go to concerts, as 68% of them say they enjoy seeing their favorite artists live, compared to 47% for the rest of the population. Also, 21% of them are more likely to spend money to support their preferred acts (compared to 9% for the rest of the population), as the majority of them (59%) say they would never download music illegally.

Do you see more clearly who these vinyl buyers are? They love their music, they actually live for it and their vinyl collection, and YouGov even went to the extent to explore more personal territories, asking them about personal lifestyle. And guess what? Vinyl buyers are more likely to keep their feelings to themselves (56% versus 53%) and enjoy being alone (69% vs 66%).

Vinyl buyers are lonely middle-aged people, obsessed by music, sitting at the top of a mountain of vintage records, but there is almost a contradiction in all this… How can they be lonely if they go to concerts all the time? Oh wait I know about that! But there’s nothing wrong about being alone and being a music lover… so vinyl collectors are totally cool in my book.

At the end, this study tends to demonstrate that the vinyl revolution will not last very long, since after this generation, nobody will buy records anymore.
