My Final Gov Ball: Friday, June 9th, 2023

With a sense of impending dread I’ve been expecting my age to catch up with me and fourteen years after I started, it did just that on Friday. In 2009, 2010, I was going to five concerts a week, by 2015 I was down to three, and then the pandemic brought everything to a standstill, and when I got back to reviewing concerts I didn’t have the energy. I cut back to where I am now, something like 1 to 2 concerts a week.

But I was up for Gov Ball -though it wasn’t a great line-up it was certainly good enough and Flushing Meadows brought it to my back door. And that’s when their first mistake became transparent: they needed busses to take us from Citifield to Flushing Meadows: it’s at least a half hour walk away and much longer when you are losing mobility, it took me over an hour.

I spoke to security afterwards and they advised me they could try and get help for the backhome portion. There is no way to get from A to B without walking there, what were they doing with the disabled?

It was a fine day for a festival except Flushing Meadows was so large it made Gov Ball seem a little shoddy, a little smaller than life. Despite the concrete parking lot it was so close to getting out it was buzzing all day, by the time you reach Flushing Meadows it might be a problem. It was for me.

I came out of security and opposite Gov Ball’s primary stage and a tangent on their planet of the apes Statue Of Liberty. Usually, I start trying to figure out where everything was but since I couldn’t walk very well, I propped myself against a tree and stayed there from 145pm – 4pm -the Saba and Eladio Carrion sets. When it was over my legs were still not working and most people couldn’t help in the slightest but some did help and I finally got a lift to the uber lot and it was so far away I see no way to have walked their from where I was.

So as long as Gov Ball is at Flushing Meadows, deal me out. And if that is the case, I got two good ones to see me to the door: the alt rapper Saba and the reggaeton soon to be superstar Eladio Carrion. Eladio is the face of reggaeton, he has worked with Bad Bunny but he misses the genius level, Saba is a terrific rapper but you only get that on stage where his flow blew us away. Both are electronic musicians, neither uses a band but rather a PC and a MC and with a large stage they fill it it with life in the early afternoon.

And I wanted to be there for the long haul because look at this I missed on the GoPuff stage:

Joey Bada$$

Ice Spice

Metro Boomin

Lil Uzi Vert

But it is certainly a good thing I left.

There will come a day when rocknyc is just a memory, if that, till then…
