I certainly don’t care about the Billboard Music Awards, but since they were happening yesterday in Los Angeles, it’s worth mentioning one thing: these ceremonies are beyond ridiculous. Morgan Wallen won 3 awards (Top Country Artist, Top Country Male Artist, Top Country Album for ‘Dangerous: The Double Album’) and he was also a nominee in three other categories. Of course, the irony is that Wallen was not attending the Awards show at the Microsoft theater because he had been banned. This was the result of a January 31 incident, videotaped by one of his neighbors and posted on TMZ a few days later. In the video, a very drunk Wallen was using the N-word when talking to friends as they were entering his Nashville home. ‘Morgan Wallen is a finalist this year based on charting. As his recent conduct does not align with our core values, we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting),’ declared Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Billboard Music Awards.
The problem (for Billboard) is that winners are not chosen by a voting committee but simply determined by performance on the Billboard chart based on album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, and social engagement). And Morgan Wallen has been doing extremely well at this level in the past year: his album has been No 1 in the Country and all genre charts for weeks and the January incident didn’t affect his performance at all. Basically, Wallen was canceled by the establishment – he was also banned from the 56th Annual ACM Awards and declared ineligible to compete – but his public couldn’t care less. And because the Billboard Music Awards has a completely democratic system, Morgan Wallen won 3 Billboard Awards despite being canceled.
It’s simple, there are only 2 possibilities: either people who buy/stream Wallen’s music don’t care and they are as ‘racist’ as he is, or they don’t buy the Wallen-is-a-racist narrative pushed by the media. According to social media – and common sense – the second possibility is obviously the correct one. I have no idea what kind of person Morgan Wallen really is – how could I? – but neither do most people who are canceling him. It’s ridiculous we have reached such an extreme nuances-deprived state so that people who would like to bring some nuances will not even do it because they are too scared to agree with Fox News. As a result, on one side, we have people who think Wallen is a white supremacist (yes I read this), and on the other hand, we have his herds of fans who are decided to give the finger to the industry. They surely succeeded yesterday.
