More About This Infamous Morrissey Interview

Does everyone realize that all these Morrissey quotes that music sites keep sending at us, all come from this same Der Spiegel interview? For a week or so, we have been fed by Morrissey’s declarations about rape, sexual assaults, open borders, Kevin Spacey and Harvey Weinstein, and I guess it pays to milk the cow because there was a second wave of these outrageous quotes this weekend with more about Morrissey on Trump and culture. But once again, Morrissey said everything in one single interview and there is no need to make it appear to be some new things he just said!

But this is what happens these days, and headlines like ‘Morrissey says he would kill Donald Trump’, are obvious click-baits, that deserve their own posts! But once again all these declarations come from the same Der Spiegel interview, despite the fact that everyone is now talking about it as a new declaration.

So what did Morrissey say? First of all, the interviewer sort of tricked him, and just after Morrissey said Trump was ‘vermin’, he asked him ‘If there was a button here and if you pressed on it, Trump would die dead — would you push it or not?’ to what Morrissey answered ‘I would, for the safety of humanity. It has nothing to do with my personal opinion of his face or his family, but in the interest of humanity I would push.’

I know, it’s a stupid answer but it’s obvious the interviewer was fishing for this type of thing, he saw Morrissey getting angry at Trump, so asked the outrageous question. I don’t know about journalists these days, but I would never ask ‘Would you kill this person?’ in an interview, it sounds totally unethical, but may be it was done as a joke? And in this case, this should transpire in the interview, and it doesn’t seem to be the case (although I don’t read German).

In the same interview, Morrissey also reaffirmed his ambiguous love for ‘cultures’, declaring: ‘If you try to make everything multicultural, you will not have any culture in the end, I want Germany to be German. I want France to be French’, which obviously could come from the mouth of French Ultra-Right leader Marie le Pen, or the mouth of the same person he wants to kill. He looks like the worst racist ever.

Honestly the entire interview sounds like a way to get everything you could from Morrissey, the questions were brushing very large, from sexual assaults, to politics, whereas he is a musician first, releasing a new album! The interviewer, probably aware that Morrissey has a complete inability to be politically correct, wanted to get the most juicy and offensive quotes he could get. I don’t defend Morrissey, he should know better, but he never seems to care at all. He doesn’t even care if nothing of what he says makes sense. At the end, Morrissey is a lot of things, an anti-monarchist, an English nationalist, a social conservative, a Brexit supporter, a Border defender, a Trump potential killer, a working class romanticism, a rapist and pedophile apologist, and of course animal lover … but I am sure he still has a bunch of random opinions to share with us.
