I love popcorn like everyone else, but shouldn’t you know you can’t call your website selling the popular puffy grains, ‘KingOfPop‘, without a risk to get in trouble? According to TMZ, this is what is happening to this website selling all kinds of flavored popcorns from bacon cheddar to white chocolate caramel. The Michael Jackson estate has filed a lawsuit against the company, and it’s kind of comical and trivial at the same time.
KingofPop is not even new, it exists since 2012, and the company is defending itself by saying that the word pop is a ‘nickname for popcorn products’, which could work. However, there is a part that tells us that this is not a simple coincidence and that they knew what they were doing: they bought the domain name from a former Michael Jackson fan website, so pretending to ignore this is not a reference to Michael Jackson is just one corn too hard to swallow.
The estate wants to shut down the site but they obviously also want damages, and this is a shame because these popcorn look damn tasty! Shouldn’t Michael Jackson family leave this kind of business alone? I am no legal expert but do they even own the term ‘King of Pop’? If tomorrow I call my new eatery ‘King of Soul’ can I expect a lawsuit from the James Brown estate? may be, but Michael Jackson’s estate has made $2 billion since his death, what else do they want? As long as it’s not doing any damage to their memory, I will call this type of lawsuit ridiculous and extremely greedy, but what’s new?
