‘Me Too’, Bjork Versus Lars Von Trier

The world has become a different place since the ‘Me Too’ meme has spread all over social media, following the revelation of Harvey Weinstein’s history of sexual harassment toward women. Women of all backgrounds have finally decided to share their worst experience of sexual harassment, and even a strong woman like Bjork is taking this opportunity to talk about a personal episode she had never revealed before. This is what she wrote on her Facebook page on Sunday:

‘i am inspired by the women everywhere who are speaking up online to tell about my experience with a danish director . because i come from a country that is one of the worlds place closest to equality between the sexes and at the time i came from position of strength in the music world with hard earned independence , it was extremely clear to me when i walked into the actresses profession that my humiliation and role as a lesser sexually harassed being was the norm and set in stone with the director and a staff of dozens who enabled it and encouraged it . i became aware of that it is a universal thing that a director can touch and harass his actresses at will and the institution of film allows it . when i turned the director down repeatedly he sulked and punished me and created for his team an impressive net of illusion where i was framed as the difficult one . because of my strength , my great team and because i had nothing to loose having no ambitions in the acting world , i walked away from it and recovered in a years time . i am worried though that other actresses working with the same man did not . the director was fully aware of this game and i am sure of that the film he made after was based on his experiences with me . because i was the first one that stood up to him and didn’t let him get away with it

and in my opinion he had a more fair and meaningful relationship with his actresses after my confrontation so there is hope

Although she doesn’t name this Danish director, everyone has guessed she was speaking about Lars von Trier, who directed ‘Dancer in the Dark’, after all Bjork’s filmography is not very long. Obviously, almost immediately after this the Danish director denied the allegations in the Danish newspaper Jylannds Posten.. According to IndieWire, the answer came through his business partner Peter Aalbaek Jensen, who said that the director was surprised by the claims. ]As far as I remember, we were victims, that woman was stronger than both Lars von Trier and me and our company together.’

There’s no mystery there were deep conflicts between the singer and the director during the making of the movie, but these accusations bring the story to another level.

The idea of von Trier harassing a woman is not too difficult to imagine when you have seen his movies, I still have nausea at the thought of any scene of the Antichrist, and after all, this is a man who has said he understood Hitler… so harassing Bjork must have been his lesser crime. These deeply disturbing scenes of Gainsbourg mutilating genitals and drilling hole in her husband’s leg have fucked me up for life and are way too perverse to be coming out of a sane mind. I know that we have to separate the art from the artist, but I will make an exception in von Trier’s case.

I can’t imagine anything happening to him though, men like him are adored by the critics and will always get away with murder, despite Bjork’s courageous statement.
