Live Through This: rock nyc Concert Picks 7-24-17 – 7-30-17

Ski Mask the Slump God is xxxtentacion’s best friend and a founding member of the entire soundcloud revolution is back in nyc after his April gig. WIth the New York Times story on the newest generation of rappers and the scene they’ve brought to life bringing excitement to a fever pitch,  plus the release of a, wow, really, album You Will Regret, and xxx on hiatus, Wednesday at the Studio At Webster Hall is your one chance to see what the fuss is about.  Joining Ski are other soundcloud generation performers 16yrold, Grownboitrap, Honcho, and Hooligan Chase

Monday – MUSE: to benefit the Coalition for the Homeless – Summerstage, Central Park – The interest here, even if you’re not a Muse fan, is whether Muse are gonna perform a stripped down version of their way over the top stage production. It will be like Kiss without the make-up.

Tuesday – Sunday – Phish – Madison Square Garden – Like it or not, this is an event, and whether you like em or not, they should be scene, er, seen. I go both ways with the band, when they play groove or when they get their Dead American Beauty vibe going I am so there, and when they go jazz math I’m not. I’ve already caught em once on this stand and would go again if I could fit em in.

Tuesday – The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Webster Hall – About as much fun as Prince Buster fans ever are: lots and lots.

Wednesday, Thursday – Tom Petty – Forest Hills – I wasn’t crazy about em at Prudential but I am going again because a) Petty says this will be his last full scale tour, 2) Peter Wolfe is opening, 3) I saw Tom at Prudential last month which means I left too early, and D) My niece is going and I haven’t seen her in awhile.

Wednesday – Hans Zimmer Live On Tour – Radio City Music Hall – “Dunkirk” is the most overrated movie of all time. Yes, Virginia, the entire movie critic community (with the exception of Armond White) can be wrong. Zimmer wrote the score.

Wednesday – Queen + Adam Lambert – Prudential Center -If you can get over the missing Mercury, this is a pretty good band performing the hits with Lambert grown up and a fair lead singer

Wednesday – The Decemberists And Olivia Chaney Are OFFA REX – Town Hall – Terrific old school Fairport Convention-y folk music on their debut album, should be terrific on stage.

Thursday – LFO w/ special guest CEONEO – Gramercy Theatre – With Rich Cronin’s tragic death from leukemia at the age of 36 in 2010, LFO should be a done deal but even so, why not go out and play the songs again, right? It sure won’t hurt Cronin to be remembered. Altogether now: “New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits, Chinese food makes me sick, and I think it’s fly when girls  stop by for the summer…”

Thursday – Slayer, Lamb of God, Behemoth – The Theatre At Madison Square Garden – I kinda regret deciding to blow this off, all three of these metal superstar bands are great. LoG could be headlining themselves.

Thursday – G-DRAGON 2017 World Tour Act III, M.O.T.T.E – Barclay Center – The K-Pop king has lost his way since “Crayon” but still worth catching.

Thursday – Lloyd Banks & Vado – BB Kings – The G Unit star has a great new song, “Overload”

Friday – Sunday – Panorama Festival – Randalls Island – Friday is the keeper, with Solange followed by Frank Ocean.

Saturday, Sunday – The Classic, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Journey, Earth, Wind & Fire – Saturday is the keeper with the new old Eagles… PS I told you back when Frey died that there was no way Henley was gonna leave all that money on the table.

Saturday – The Trammps, Tavares, Yvonne Elliman, France Joli, Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes – Ford Theatre At Coney Island – I went to the 25th year Anniversary gig, where the Bee Gees headlined, and I saw  The Trammps and Tavares again  at that Legends of Disco gig at Hammerstein in 2012 (here) and if this gig wasn’t deep in Brooklyn I would undoubtedly go a third time.

Saturday – Jerry Lee Lewis – BB Kings – All you’ll get is thirty minutes of Jerry Lee -the last man standing from 50s first generation of rock superstars.

Saturday – Belle And Sebastian – Knitting Factory – Really at the Knitting Factory? Last time I saw em was at Radio City.

Sunday – The Black Dahlia Murder, Dying Fetus, Oceano – Webster Hall – 230pm? More bands should do this, I still miss CBGB’s hardcore matinees. Somebody should recommend it to Bowery Electric, or at least Arlene’s.
