Live Through This: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks For The Week Of December 31st, 2018

Phish NYE 2016

You don’t have to do it more than once BUT if you can, do it at least once, check out Phish on New Year’s Eve at Madison Square Garden. I went way back in 2016 (here) and this year I’ve been eyeballing it as well, but will probably pass. It is a really good vibe and the only problem is, as such, that jam music is about moments of transcendence and if the band doesn’t reach that peak you are wasting your time… Still, it is a must see that one time, at least. And maybe you’ll get lucky and it will change your life.

Monday – Macy Gray – Iridium – Chill r&b before chill r&b existed -long before it existed, Macy ran out of time and this year’s Ruby is the sort of album that opens with a Gary Clark, Jr. collaboration  (he never came close to the hype, did he?). Still, Gray should have a stellar band behind her and pull out all stops for her annual Hogmanay.

Monday – The Fab Faux – City Winery? You know, I don’t think the Beatles ever did compose  a New Year’s song…. maybe “I’ve Got A Feeling”?

Monday – Dark Star Orchestra – Cosmic New Year’s Eve – The Wellmont Theatre

Monday – Govt Mule – Beacon Theatre – If you can’t get into math wiz kids Phish, get into Southern boogie Govt Mule.

Monday – The Lone Bellow w/ Courtney Marie Andrews – Bowery Ballroom – Not sure about Lone Bellow but Courtney should turn the trick…

Monday – NYE w/ Nothing + Weekend + Teen Body + DJ Jordan + DJ Fembmp – Knitting Factory

Monday – Margo Price – MHOW – The country singer was excellent at Gov Ball in June

Monday – Get Up Kids – Rough Trade – Debatably the best emo band ever, definitely in the top five.

Monday – Post Malone – Barclay Center – I wonder if the emo-rapper pop star has anything up his sleeves

Monday – Billy Joel – NYCB LIVE, Home of The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum

Monday – Snoop Dogg – Terminal 5

Wednesday, Thursday – Steel Pulse – Brooklyn Bowl – Of all the things I cover here, I cover reggae least. Maybe that should change…

Friday – NPG – The New Power Generation – Sony Hall – The Revolution were terrible at BB Kings, and 3rdeyegirl seem to be breaking in two and following a non Prince muse, so that leaves NPG. I have no idea what to expect but at forty bucks I might as well find out…

Friday – Felix Cavaliere – City Winery

Friday – Jimmy Webb – Iridium – The great singer songwriter

Saturday – Willie Nile – City Winery

Saturday – Nonname – Brooklyn Steel – I would love to see the terrific jazz chill r&b woman, but enough to go to Brooklyn???

Sunday – Juggalo Unity Tour w/ Blaze Ya Dead Homie, ABK (Anybody Killa) & Special Guests – Dingbatz

Sunday – Darlene Love – Sony Hall – I guess baby didn’t come home…
