Live Through This: rock nyc’s Concert Picks 7-14-17 – 7-20-17

Shelby Lynn is strange but wonderful, a sort of bruised beauty who draws you into her live performances with stealther otherness and terrific songsand that voice. Her sister Allison Moorer, the one time I saw her, with the Dukes, was a revelation. Moorer’s last album, Down To Believing, was one of the best of 2015. All  four songs off the sisters’ impending album have been fine, and the City Winery show on Sunday is so big that I am blowing off the second day of the Billboard Hot 100 Music Festival to catch em. Oh, and the Dylan cover? Classic.

Tuesday – Iron Butterfly – BB Kings – So ya think Iron Butterfly will be 90 minutes of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”? We can but hope.

Tuesday – Jimmy Buffett – Jones Beach – Perfect shed for the changes in attitude changes in altitude denizen of Margaritaville  and his parrotheads.

Tuesday, Wednesday – Bomba Estéreo – Irving Plaza – Their new release, Ayo, is one of the best dance albums of the year and the Colombian duo have sold out both nights. The last album broke em through in the Latin American markets, if they get  Justin Bieber on a track they would blow up Anglo.

Wednesday – : United We Rock Tour 2017, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Don Felder – Jones Beach – If this was closer to home I swear I’d check it out firm in the knowledge it would have been a nightmare show for the teenage me.

Wednesday – Shawn Mendes: Illuminate World Tour – Barclay Center – Three years ago I couldn’t throw a brick without hitting Shawn opening for someone, but if my Great Niece in Scotland Miriam El-Djazairy, is representational, Mendes is now legend. At the very least, he loves his fans.

Thursday – Dru Hill – BB Kings – The boy band for r&b fans of the 1990s are always worth catching, I once saw em hold their own opening for Blackstreet and New Edition.

Thursday – The Beach Boys – Beacon Theatre – Mike Love’s version… so consider it this week’s Ted Nugent moment. Or, more accurately, effective as nostalgia but lousy as art, and keep the disinfection handy for after the show.

Thursday – Dave Chappelle & Chance The Rapper: Live From Radio City – Dave was good not great when I saw him last week, Chance is always great, and if I wasn’t going to see Solange and Dave next week, I would consider it.

Thursday – Playboi Carti & Friends –  Stage 48 – Baby Trap and a very good one, Lil Uzi Vert is in town… think he’ll show?

Friday – Lionel Richie: All The Hits With Very Special Guest Mariah Carey –  Prudential Center – 80s and 90s superstars, Carey is always fun and Richie? With 20 odd hits, he might still bore.

Friday – Mary J. Blige: Strength of a Woman Tour – Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – The last time I saw Mary J was the best time I’ve seen her in decades… and that was last year. So if you are thinking of seeing her, now is the time to do it.

Saturday, Sunday – Billboard’s Hot 100 Festival – I’m going Saturday, Big Sean, Demi Lovato, Zedd, and Gucci Mane. I’ll probably leave after Gucci.

Saturday –  One Africa Music Fest, Timaya, Tekno, P-Square, Banky W, Shatta Wale – Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – Timaya sounds a lot like reggaeton with even better drums and the night works as a primer for World Music.
