Live Through This: rock nyc Top Concert Picks Week Of August 1st, 2016

You’ve never seen Drake on stage? He’s no Kanye or Jay Z but he held his own with Lil Wayne at Forest Hills a coupla years ago, and the setlist with Future on this tour, a 50 song romp, is pretty darn spectacular. So maybe this is the time to catch up with the biggest pop star in the world right now this minute at Madison Square Garden this Thursday through Saturday.

Monday – Garbage – Summerstage – That new album is a bummer but even so, Shirley is always a pleasure to see.

Wednesday – Erykah Badu with Hiatus Kaiyote – Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – Last year’s  But You Caint Use My Phone mixtape, found the world championing neo-soul chanteuse in peak form. Plus the two times I’ve seen she was greater and would be greater  still if she had got on stage at a halfway reasonable time. If it was at Radio City and not on the end of Brooklyn, I’d go.

Thursday – Brad Paisley: Life Amplified World Tour – Jones Beach – I haven’t seen him since a pretty good show at MSG years ago, but since then he has lost his way as often as found it, so judge for yourself whether the once king of country can regain his crown.

Thursday – The Fleshtones – The Jewel – Rocks Off Concert Cruise – 80s garage rockers psychedelia fiends much beloved by rock critics.

Friday – Dinosaur Jr – Rough Trade NYC – The new album is really good and live they are a hard guitar band on a whole other level.

Friday – The Originals: DMX featuring N.O.R.E., Jim Jones, Jadakiss & Friends – Apollo Theatre – Who says there are no second acts, DMX is up to his fourth and still going, well, not strong, but still going.

Sunday – Paul McCartney – One on One – Metlife Stadium – Used to be with the Beatles.
