Live Through This: rock nyc Concert Picks Week Of June 12th, 2017

I watched the  Nick Cave post-tragedy documentary the other day and while I buy completely that there was nothing anything else but tragic about it, even so it left me uncomfortable, and pained. The last time I saw Nick Cave live was in 2013 (here) and I couldn’t buy into his foth vision of the world, like everything is Stagger Lee in a world that wasn’t THAT TERRIBLE for him.  Four years later, the hand of fate has sure answered that particular problem, and even if he hadn’t, Skeleton Tree was one of the best albums of 2016. On Tuesday, Nick will be at the Beacon and let’s see how he deals with his new reality live on stage.

Monday – Freddie Gibbs, Remy Banks, Scholito Envoy – Highline Ballroom – Remy is a legend and Freddie should be one, but he is like that old story about a kid who practised and practised till he was the fastest gun in the West, came out to start his career and discovered the times were changed and was jailed.

Tuesday –  Deftones, Rise Against, Thrice, Three Trapped Tigers – Jones Beach – First tier headliners if you like modern rock and roll.

Wednesday – Eddie Izzard ‘believe Me’ Book Tour – Town Hall – The problem with Eddie is that while great over half an hour, over 90 minutes you get laughed out.

Wednesday – Steve Earle and David Simon – David Simon is the the Wire creator and Steve we know, I wonder what they’ve got cooking up.

Thursday, Saturday – Neil Diamond 50th Anniversary Tour – Madison Square Garden – When last seen live he was hawking a Rick Rubin produced album, let’s hope he keeps to the hits on this show.

Thursday – Lizzo, Brooke Candy – Webster Hall – When last seen she was blowing fans waiting for their first Sighting of Sleater Kinney away. This should be a goodie.

Friday – Bli Summer Jam, Flo Rida, DNCE, Martin Garrix, Sean Paul, Jason Derulo- Rida and Derulo are hit making machines a touch past their prime, DNCE is a hate making machine which may not have reached its prime yet.

Friday  – Daryl Hall & John Oates – Forest Hills Stadium – They can go on a bit when they jam out,  but what price “Rich Girl”?

Friday – Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers – Prudential Center – No “Don’t Do Me Like That,” the bastard but hey at least there’s “Free Fallin'”. Joe Walsh is opening, I wish it was Jackson Browne

Saturday – Valerie Simpson – BB Kings – If you can get her to stop talking about Jesus for five minutes, she is pretty damn awesome.

Saturday – Isley Brothers – Kings Theatre – The last, original, greatest band of all time still standing. A lesson in changing with the times… just not too much.

Sunday – HIllsong United Wonder Album Launch Night – Beacon Theatre – I seriously wanted to see this, Hillsong won a highly coveted “F” grade for their new alum, the dreaded Wonder, and I have a morbid fascination with how they would do live.
