Listen To Nina Diaz’s New Album, ‘The Beat Is Dead’

Nina Diaz

This girl deserves your full attention. Nina Diaz’s new album, ‘The Beat is Dead’ is streaming on NPR, a few days before its official release on October 28th on Cosmica Records, and the 13-song album sweats ferocious and electrifying rock & roll, while Nina’s poignant howls bring emotion at each tune.

I am streaming it for the first time, and there’s not a bad song, there’s not a tune that doesn’t captivate your attention, she channels the greatest with a big voice and melodies that will curl in your ear for a long time. I saw her with her band Girl in a Coma many years ago, and she was absolutely at the top of her game, raw and vindictive, but also seductive, while alternating between aggressive tunes with soaring and angry vocals, and tender and quieter ballads. Her hair in her face, covered by sweat, she was in full control of her voice and music, and she was dominating the stage with a total assurance and a badass energy.

This new album is not a Girl in a Coma album, this is Diaz going solo in a much more straight-up rock style and some introspective lyrics: Nina battled alcohol addiction while she was still in her early 20s, but eventually got sober and her music reflects her journey to sobriety, expressed with a rare and fiery passion. Even at the first listening, this sounds like a powerful album with some dark emotion and multi-faceted, complex but truly catchy songs, sung with a visceral strength. And this is something not really surprising coming from this Morrissey-lover — her band was obviously named after the song ‘Girlfriend in a coma’.

So give Nina Diaz a try, her expansive sound is as big as her voice. On the opening song, ‘Trick Candle’, as on many other tracks, she channels Garbage’s Shirley Manson, and her boldness only equals her vulnerability which surfaces at each track coated by giant hooks and a Latino influence more obvious during a tune like ‘Rebirth’. This girl deserves all your attention so stream her album on NPR and catch Nina on tour at one of these dates:
