Father John Misty is back in our consciousness with a new song, not that he had really left, he is always there, writing some deep comments on Twitter (like ‘Life’s unfair, entertainment makes us think otherwise’) or releasing some mockery tracks on Soundcloud,… I know that Iman can’t stand him, but I found him very entertaining, he always speaks up his mind and may be he speaks up a bit too much sometimes? At the recent Philadelphia’s XPoNential Music Festival, he made fun of Donald Trump’s nomination and called it ‘the demonic clown pageant coronation of our next potential Idiot King’ and reportedly barely played a thing… People got a speech instead. This is what Pitchfork wrote: ‘he took the stage and was offered a guitar, but turned it down. Instead, he started talking about the ‘numbing’ role entertainment plays in people’s lives and how ‘stupidity just fucking runs the world.’ Throughout the lecture, he repeatedly referenced a battleship located near the stage’… was he high? He performed a 10-minute piece, a Leonard Cohen’s cover, and he left the stage. What did I say? I found him very entertaining and he obviously is our new philosopher, but I would have been pissed off if I had paid to see him.
Another thing, he is not a sell out! A few days ago, he played another festival, the Newport Folk Festival, and he revealed that he was offered a quarter of a million dollars to cover backstreet Boys’ I Want it that Way’ for Chipotle, but he declined. ‘I don’t want your fucking burrito money,’ he punctuated his story with. With Father John Misty, we are never sure, may be this didn’t really happen and he was making fun of the following day’s headliners, Alabama Shakes and My Morning Jacket, whose frontman/woman have teamed up to do that very same cover for the fast food chain. back on Twitter, he sort of tweeted the moral of the story: ‘Point of the Chipote story was a discussion on whether folk music is good for anything anymore other than just the selling of things’, and that’s why I love him.
So I don’t know, but ‘Real Love Baby’, a brand new song by Father John Misty, would probably be good at selling something… a car?… a perfume? a burrito? But he is not going to let this happen, not a chance, he is free! And the song was just declared best new track by Pitchfork!
If you are a die-hard fan you will probably know that he uploaded the song on soundcloud months ago but only released the single on Monday. It is a happy upbeat, all-summery tune, which will make you feel good, especially if you are in love and are experiencing this amazing feeling of freedom that comes with it. It’s a soulful track with lots of back up voices, which give a real folk-hippie vibe to the track, but it’s also a big declaration to the woman he loves, to the sky and the stars, and let’s just say that, with lyrics like these, ‘I’m a flower, you’re my bee/It’s much older than you and me/I’m in love, I’m alive/I belong to the stars and sky’, this song won’t make you change your mind if you can’t suffer the guy.
