Lindsey Way & Jessicka Addams’ Opening Night At La Luz De Jesus, Friday February 5th 2016

Jessica Addams and Lindsey Way

My evening at la Luz de Jesus turned me into a sort of paparazzi for a night… I came for the arts, well not totally, but at least I pretended to come for the arts, and I was hoping to see a few music celebrities and they all showed up, it was actually celebrity galore.

La Luz de Jesus is the art gallery picked by Lindsey Way and Jessicka Addams to present their two new art shows, entitled ‘Shitty Teen’ and ‘Please Stop Loving Me’. The two have paired for a while apparently, and if their respective works are not quite similar, the word weird would apply in both cases

Jessicka has a clear fascination for Goth culture, John Waters, blood, death and cats and her work exactly oscillates between bright-red blood, black cats and white skin … it’s morbid of course, a bit funny and sometimes a bit cute. Jessicka is also in the indie band Scarling and Jack Off Jill. Lindsey’s work is far more difficult to describe but turns around hand written notes that contain the author’s ugliest moments of adolescence, dangerous thoughts of self destruction and inner loathing declarations,The notes are repurposed as raw mixed media, with titles like ‘Girls that do boy things and boys that do girl things’, ‘Radical’, ‘Definitively uncomfortable’, ‘I am garbage’, ‘ Fuck death’, ‘Neighborhood crime watch’… She also plays bass in punk band Mindless Self Indulgence and she is, of course, the wife of My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way.

Both artists were present, and they spent an impressive amount of time greeting fans, friendly talking with the public. Gerard Way showed up too, to the great delight of many young Goth girls, and if he had not disappeared in the dark backyard where they were serving beer and cocktails, he would be still busy signing stuff… Director Kevin Smith is apparently a big fan, he was there and attentively looked at each piece with his daughter, And Jessicka gave him a big hug when he told her he had bought some art.

The place was crowded, hours later I was leaning against the wall, looking at the Goth crowd and thinking about leaving soon, when I saw a young very thin woman with piercing blue eyes arriving in my direction, she was walking very fast, visibly eager to join the dark backyard as soon as possible. I immediately recognized her, she was Lindsey Way’s good friend, Frances Bean Cobain. I followed her, decided to take a few pictures without even asking her permission, however, I could not do it discreetly because it was so dark in the backyard that I had to use the flash… soon, I was asked to stop as I expected! But it was not too bad for an art opening night, when I barely focused on the art!
