Kanye West has his own line of Christian streetwear, socks and shoes included, but he has now serious concurrence, Lil Nas X is launching the Satan Shoes.
A Brooklyn-based company, MSCHF, which had already given us the ‘Walk on Water Jesus Shoes,’ a customized Air Max 97 Nike sneakers with a crucifix pendant, is now releasing a pair of Satan Shoes in collaboration with the young rapper. They look like the same Nike Air Max 97s but black (of course) and decorated with a pentagram pendant, a ‘666’ (corresponding to the number of pairs they will release), and a reference to Luke 10:18, a Bible verse about Satan’s fall from heaven. Wait, weren’t some people just celebrating Passover? That’s hilarious, but this will certainly piss off plenty of religious people.
The demonic sneakers will be on sale on Monday for the modest sum of $1,018… but wait until you know all the details before complaining. The manufacturers pretend that each pair of shoes will contain 66cc of red ink with a drop of human blood in the sole, drawn from members of the MSCHF team. This sounds fair, considering that the Jesus Shoes contained holy water in its sole, drawn from the River Jordan…
The Satan Shoes are an obvious reference to the very popular video for ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ that Lil Nas X dropped a few days ago, including his pole slide to hell and lap dance with the devil. Today, Lil Nas X briefly presented the new shoes (and apologized) on Youtube, while tweeting in defense of his bold new product.
Of course, Nike was fast at distancing themselves from this new endeavor: ‘We do not have a relationship with Little Nas X or MSCHF,’ Nike said in a statement. ‘Nike did not design or release these shoes and we do not endorse them.’ But it may be a bit too late:
‘These #SatanShoes by #Nike & #LilNasX with 666 and a drop of human blood in the sole is a reason why we Christians must be prayed up ready to battle in the spirit with the Voice of the Holy Spirit. This is evil & heresy and I pray that Christians rise up against this,’ Pastor Mark Burns wrote. ‘We’ve turned George Floyd, a criminal drug addict, into an icon. We are promoting Satan shoes to wear on our feet. We’ve got Cardi B named as woman of the year. But we’re convinced it’s white supremacy that’s keeping black America behind. How stupid can we be?’ Candace Owens tweeted. ‘Our kids are being told that this kind of product is, not only okay, it’s “exclusive.” But do you know what’s more exclusive? Their God-given eternal soul. We are in a fight for the soul of our nation. We need to fight hard. And we need to fight smart. We have to win.’ South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem tweeted.
Religious and conservatives are gonna be all over the shoes tomorrow on all talk shows and that’s only good news for Lil Nas X.
