Let’s Keep Real With The Bowie Pictures Please!

david john

With David Bowie’s passing, everyone wants to be part of the picture, literally! The picture above was tweeted by Yoko Ono the day following his death with the text:

‘John and David respected each other,” Ono wrote. “They were well matched in intellect and talent. As John and I had very few friends, we felt David was as close as family.

After John died, David was always there for Sean and me. When Sean was at boarding school in Switzerland, David would pick him up and take him on trips to museums and let Sean hang out at his recording studio in Geneva.

For Sean, this is losing another father figure. It will be hard for him, I know. But we have some sweet memories which will stay with us forever.’

This is touching, and she used the right words for sure, but if David Bowie and John Lennon were so close, couldn’t she have used a better picture? I mean by that not a photoshopped one? The real picture (below) also included Simon and Garfunkel, right between Bowie and Lennon, as the shot was taken by Ron Galella, during the Grammy Awards on March 1st 1975. A source reveals that the photo has already been photoshopped in 2010, so Yoko Ono is not responsible for the alteration, but shouldn’t she have known better? She was there after all, and she has seen the original before. Anyway, Yoko took a lot of excessive hatred on Twitter for this faux-pas, but may be she could have used this other picture – true, we can’t see her face on this one and there are not many pictures of the three of them. Billboard and Rolling Stone were so ashamed of the story, they had to use another picture of the same day to tell the story.

But it was not the only fake picture story of the day… may be you have seen this one (see below), showing David Bowie and Lemmy Kilmister pausing together, during what seems to be the coolest rock party ever… well, according to Metal Injection, it’s a fake too! They found the original one among the famous Getty Images, showing Lemmy in the exact same position, with the exact same expression, posing with his French girlfriend during his Hawkwind-pre-Motorhead days. It’s terrible, who did this? I got fooled, you got fooled and looking at the many Facebook likes, a lot of people got fooled.

But does it matter after all? Bowie and Lennon really knew each other, and Bowie and Lemmy were two great icons. I nevertheless don’t like forgery to embellish the truth. Bowie’s life is already great as it is.
