Let’s Active: rock nyc Concert Picks Week Of September 21st, 2015

EarlyBBQ-ASAPROCKYTYLERTHECREATOR-EBBQ

If you have any interest in hip hop, try Tuesday at Theatre At Madison Square Garden, headlining is ASAP Rocky and Tyler The Creator, and right below them is Vince Staples and  Danny Brown. This ain’t Junior Varsity time folks, that is four of the best rappers around, the only name missing is Vic Mensa. I’ve seen, and enjoyed, three of these guys before so I am really thrilled at the opportunity to catch Vince Staples, whose “Norf Norf” is one of the best songs of the year.

Monday, Tuesday – Ride – Irving Plaza – The most popular shoegaze band ever are back.

Monday – Youth Lagoon – Rough Trade – I once saw him perform a very bad set opening for the National at Barclay Center. Now you can say, wrong guy, wrong venue, and “Rotten Human” is a fabulous single and go, or you can pass.

Tuesday – Robert delong – Rough Trade – The new album is pretty darn good and there are few better singer songwriter electronica guys around.

Wednesday – Walk The Moon – MHOW – One hit wonders? Perhaps, but still a well crafted MOR pop rock band.

Thursday – The Jesus and Mary Chain: 30th Anniversary of Psychocandy – Terminal 5 – A terrific album played live and a good opening band, the Black Ryders. If only they’d move it to the Beacon I’d be so there.

Friday – Jackson Brown – King’s Theatre – A truly great live show with boatloads of great songs. If you’ve never seen him, find out where Dawes will always just be the Pretender.

Friday – Tedeschi Trucks Band – Beacon Theatre – Absolutely superb at Summerstage earlier this year, they aren’t the Allman Brothers but they aren’t that far behind.

Friday – The Decemberists – Radio City Music Hall – I am not a fan of these indie alty folkie guys but they were so great at Governors Ball I am going to have to stand corrected.

Friday – R. Kelly – Barclay Center – A nearly great but still, a nearly great.

Saturday – Fidlar – Webster Hall – I haven’t seen these guys live, well hyped (by us among others) for a couple of years now.

Saturday – Global Citizen – Central Park – Pearl Jam and Beyonce on the same bill??? It is a pity they double the prices for the VIP tickets.
