Last Week, Ben Gibbard’s Breakdown Was Due To A Crowd Fight, Equipment Failure, & Orlando?

Ben Gibbard

Is Ben Gibbard all right? The frontman for indie rock band Death Cab For Cutie walked off stage a few days ago, in the middle of ‘Soul Meets Body’. The incident, captured on video as anything is these days, shows Ben taking his earpiece out and throwing the mic stand away in what seems to be a reaction of anger and frustration. The crowd never realized what it was about, but it was the last song before the encore, and the band came back to play without interruption, end of the story, right?

Not really because there was no explanation given and of course when Billboard interviewed bassist Nick Harmer at the Firefly Music Festival in Dover, he had to talk about the incident: ‘It’s kind of a non-story really,’ he said. ‘It got spun as we left the stage mid-set. It was the last 20 seconds of the last song and all of Ben’s equipment failed at the exact kind of unrelated moment there was a giant fight in front of us.’

‘We would’ve finished the song but we’re all feeling a little skittish after Orlando and things were just – we weren’t sure what was happening. Suddenly, there was this moment in the crowd where we don’t see this kind of energy happen in front of us. It’s kind of scary, so we stop as a band thinking somebody’s hurt or something’s happening, but that also just happened to coincide with the same other thing that was happening with Ben and all of his gear problems.’

Several people confirmed there was effectively a fight in the front, something a bit surprising – DCFC is far from being a punk band – but there is still something strange about Ben’s reaction. If people are fighting in front of you, you call them out, wait for the security to do the job and goes on with the concert. But throwing a tantrum and storming off stage? This seems to be a bit over the top, then was it because of the equipment? Very unprofessional. Because of Orlando? What else could he come up with? Harmer seems to throw a bunch of unrelated things to explain a non-story which is actually a story, and it doesn’t make any sense. Plus, if you read the comments after a few Facebook posts, this is not the first time this has happened, is Ben Gibbard losing it? However, if you are gonna make a Jake White exit, don’t come back for the encore as if nothing had happened!
