Lady Gaga Played A Secret Show In My Neighborhood Last Night

Gaga at the Satellite

I knew there was something going on at the Satellite, because I spotted some activity early morning and many trucks were parked around the famous Silverlake nightclub, but I thought they were simply doing some filming as it happens very often in LA. It turned out it was not a movie but a Lady Gaga secret show, and the final stop of her Dive Bar Tour. She’s been playing shows in tiny dive bars all across the country the past few weeks and this Satellite show has been kept very secret. Of course I found out at 7 pm, when the show was about to start, and I wish they had already put up the ‘Joanne tonight’ on the marquee in the morning when I walked by, I would have had some suspicions,… but anyway, the only way to gain access to the show was through some sort of random drawing, and I am never lucky at these sorts of things.

So I watched the live streaming via her Facebook page, just out of curiosity.

They first had a hard time to control the crowd, and for a few minutes all you could hear was ‘I ask you to step back’… what did they expect? The Satellite is a small venue, you can sit on the stage, but they didn’t want anyone to get too close. People were chanting ‘Joanne’ while drinking Bud Light, the sponsor of the tour, and of course Lady Gaga didn’t show up immediately, about half an hour later than the time that was announced

She showed up with two back-up singers, doing the big star entrance, with vintage car and JO-AN-NE written on the back of their white matching jackets, she split the crowd and started with one of her new songs, ‘Come to Mama’, and I thought, is Lady Gaga a 60’s girl group now? The excitement seemed to be at its max intensity inside the small venue, there was even a saxophonist in the band and Gaga was getting warmer and warmer at the minute.

She took a guitar to dance more than to play during a very enjoyable ‘A-Yo’… Another new song and this sounded much better than the old Lady Gaga, it was groovy with sax and good hooks, plus Mark Ronson was on guitar. Lady Gaga seemed to enjoy herself with siren-like long hair, a gogo-girl look and a bluesy voice.

‘Elvis, he loaned me his car for tonight show ’, she said, ‘it’s a long far way to loan me something, all the way from heaven’. She put her cowboy hat, and said ‘I wrote this song about boys’ before ‘John Wayne’. Gaga thinks she is now a country star but the show still has this very glitter dancefloor and John Wayne became a hard dance number.

These were the aggressive tunes of the night, then she slowed down for ‘Million Reasons, a song number one on iTunes a bit everywhere, ‘I feel so heard as a woman’,… And even if she has a great voice, this type of show-off-voice piano songs are so predictable that they end up to be a bore with big pop hooks and some unavoidable I-hit-my-chest-with-my-fist during the soaring vocals… but you have to give to the crowds what they want.

Gaga touched the crowd and then there was the unavoidable politics-related discourse, ‘we have to love each other and focus on love not on hate’… blablabla, she has apparently never read the comments on youTube.

She disappeared after ‘Angel Down’ to reappeared braless under a white t –shirt. ‘I am so happy to be here tonight because I missed you so much’, Lady Gaga can be so sorry when she speaks, she sounded like a morning lady, and I am not saying this necessarily in a good way. She sang the title track of her album ‘Joanne’ a folksy tune with country accents just accompanied by Mark Ronson’s acoustic guitar, and went back to her monster hard hitting disco dancefloor type of song with ‘Perfect Illusion’, she jumped, crowd surfed, took a Bud Light bath, but this shirt was crying for a wet contest anyway. She hugged someone very hard, lost it and looked a bit crazy.

It was probably not a bad way to end a Thursday for a Silverlake hipster crowd? Because hipsters are totally into Gaga, right? She sounded good, and according to the pictures I saw of her leaving the club, she was wearing the tiniest denim short ever, and has a perfect beach body. I just wonder who got these precious tickets.
