L.A. Burning: West Coast Concert Picks, April 17th To April 23rd, 2017

Thee Commons

This is the week between the 2 Coachella weekends, so Los Angeles will be deserted by all its hipsters this weekend and the next one… not much to do on Saturday-Sunday except streaming Coachella on the web?

On Monday 17th, Draemings has another Monday Night Residency at the Echo, with Brass Box, Ever So Android, Dancing Tongues, Jesse Jo Stark. Every Monday has a different line-up, I saw Dreamings last week, and this was quite a show, with dead roses on the stage, white veil as curtain and a front woman looking like a cross between a glam rockstar, the devil and one of the greatest Disney female vilains.

At the Satellite, IRONTOM continues its Residency with NONA, Soulfire Collective, Varsity Week, and I may be able catch them this week

Banks and Steelz also have a show at the El Rey. I had a glimpse of them at the FYF fest last year, but again a busy festival is not the best place to discover a band. It’s Interpol meets Wu-Tang Clan, Paul Banks meets RZA, but I don’t remember their performance to be close to the music of these bands… and since the duo is playing Coachella both weekends, they are stopping by LA just a few days before Record Store Day. Zipper Club is opening, I caught them during one of their residencies at the Satellite and at that time, I described them completely stage ready with a sound between the Smashing Pumpkins and Postal Service.

On Tuesday 18th, Twin Peaks, Hinds, The Memories are visiting the Regent, and I haven’t seen any of these bands yet, but I am only including this show because I have received several emails telling me it was a hot ticket! (that’s a terrific line-up -you should go -Editor)

On Wednesday 19th, a new band I have already seen twice is playing a free show at the Hi Hat. You can be certain that Holy Wars will give a mesmerizing performance, with plenty of body contortions ,.. EasyFriend and The Crazy Brave are also playing and the show is presented by Badassbands, which tells you everything you need to know.

Thursday 20th looks like a busy day: Thee Commons are going to start a riot at the Teragram Ballroom, I know this because I have seen them a few times! You can count of these kings of Cumbia to surf up their Latino rhythms with reverb guitars, raucous vocals and plenty of undulating dance moves. Downtown Boys, Surfbort, Tall Juan are also playing.

Whitney play the El Rey, I have never seen them but Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich were in Smith Westerns, and I saw them a few times. They disbanded in 2014 but when I caught Cullen Omori solo at the Echo one night, people commented ‘I prefer Whitney!’, so may be I should check them out. Plus, their music is described as a combination of Townes Van Zandt and Pavement. Dent May is opening.

Mastodon is headlining the Hollywood Palladium, supported by Eagles of Death Metal and Russian Circles… I have seen EODM in a much smaller place and they put the place on fire. The Palladium is just one stop of a big spring tour, which actually started on Friday 14th! Expect a lot of fury, a giant mosh pit, and probably a lot of fun, but should I add that EODM is not a metal band?

On Friday 21st, you will have to go to The Fox Theater in Pomona to see the legendary Pixies, but you may have more chances to see them later on, as they also play the House of Blues in Anaheim on Sunday 23rd and the Theater at Ace Hotel on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th. Unfortunately, all the shows may be already sold out, and they don’t even play Coachella!

On Saturday 22th, the Regent is having A Special Evening With Reverend Horton Heat & Dale Watson, an event labeled ‘Two original Texas Bad-asses go on a musical tour together’… Two Texas icons teaming up for the first time and Willie Nelson is a big fan!

Also, historical house HM157 is hosting a very psychedelic event with Dead Meadow, the Warlocks, Cosmonauts, Creation Factory, Drinking Flowers, and Joel Jerome. It’s a DIY event and it looks like a mini festival with an interesting line-up.

At the Hi Hat, Cool-Tite is celebrating 3 years of ‘Bringing you LA’s coolest, titest garage, punk, and vinyl’ with a party featuring Prettiest Eyes, Cigarette Bums and Pinky Pinky, 3 bands I have already seen and enjoyed greatly, Prettiest Eyes is all about a ravaging bass and a mad and aggressive rhythm, Pinky Pinky is girlie and bluesy with an amazing croon and the trash pop punk of Cigarette Bums is simply a lot of fun.

And at the Roxy, Guided by Voices will play some of their numerous songs, … don’t they have something like 100 LPs? Prism Tats are opening.

Beside Banks & Steelz, I have not mentioned any Goldenvoice-Coachella April sideshows and this means a lot about my interest into the big Indio festival.
