It’s almost summer, and the outdoor venues like the Greek or the Hollywood Bowl, are starting their season, and soon, there will be more free concerts you can digest at once. This trend is even starting this Monday, June 12th, which will be a very busy day with too many options… Of course a few concerts may already be sold out, like this Franz Ferdinand gig at the Regent Theater… but you may be able to find tickets anyway. I hadn’t heard about them for a while, where have they been? Atlanta-based Omni is opening.
But this is only one show of a very busy night:
Boston artist Nick Hakim will be celebrating his new album ‘Green Twins’ at Amoeba.
Laura Pergolizzi, aka LP, an amazing vocalist with an incredible range, has a show at the El Rey. I saw her a few times in smaller clubs and I am happy to see her playing at a larger but still cozy venue like the El Rey. Josiah and the Bonnevilles are opening.
Rostam (Vampire Weekend) is at the Masonic Lodge At Hollywood Forever Cemetery with BUCK and Kelly Zutrau, and, unsurprisingly, the show is already sold out.
Of course, all the club residencies are still there, the delicious fairy-tale duo Moon Honey will be at the Echo with another ex-Echo-resident Draemings, plus Cellars and Alina Bea.The Walcotts will play at the Bootleg Bar with Hearty Har, Ben Jaffe (Honeyhoney) and Send Medicine will be at The Satellite with the great Avid Dancer, The Dead Horse Rhythm, and Bjorn and the Sun.
On Tuesday 13th, Pom Poms, a collaboration between vocalist/songwriter Marlene Gold and Grammy-nominated producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Billy Mohler (Awolnation, Liz Phair, Kelly Clarkson, Macy Gray), will be joined by crunchy grungy Ramonda Hammer (that I had the pleasure to see at Women Fuck Shit Up Fest last year), Brass Box and Alyeska at the Echoplex.
At the Regent theater, there is an unusual night with Joan Osborne exclusively singing Bob Dylan’s songs.
The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach will discuss his first solo album in 8 years, ‘Waiting On A Song’, at the Grammy Museum, and I have heard that he will perform a few songs.
Beth Ditto will be doing a signing at Amoeba, and this is too bad she is not performing a bit of her ‘Fake Sugar’ album by the same occasion.
On Thursday 15th, Phoenix, The Lemon Twigs, Mac DeMarco will team up at the Hollywood Bowl for a great night… I still can’t believe how far these little Lemon Twigs have gone, but when you jump like this…
(Sandy) Alex G is playing at the Echoplex with a new record released on May 19th via Domino. Everyone keeps telling me he is great, I have seen him twice and still don’t understand why everyone is throwing the Elliott Smith comparison all the time, but I may be wrong,… still, I have no idea why there is a (Sandy) in front of his name. Japanese Breakfast, Cende are opening
Gang of Youths is playing at the Echo, and I will recommend the show because the soulful band The Soft White Sixties are the openers with Livingmore. Watch for this frontman!
Kevin Morby will perform a few songs of his new album ‘City Music’ at Amoeba Music, and for having seeing him a few times, I can tell he is an interesting songwriter to follow.
And if you have missed Fishbone when they played at the Echoplex a few weeks ago, the Satellite may have a night for you with San Francisco-based singer songwriter Andrew St. James, The Lovemakers and US Elevator featuring DJ Dr. MaddVibe aka Angelo Moore.
On Friday 16th, the summer season is in full swing at the Greek theater with a Hyper Space Tour featuring Boston w/ Joan Jett & The Blackhearts ,… what else do rockers need?
Evan Dando is celebrating the reissue of his first solo album, ‘Baby I’m Bored’ at the Roxy… dark psy-rockers Gateway Drugs are opening.
And Amoeba, which has a busy week, will have a listening party for Ride’s new album ‘Weather Diaries’, their first since their 1996’s Tarantula’
On Saturday 17th, KCRW Summer Nights at One Colorado presents Chicano Batman, and these hybrid sound makers are obviously a must see, plus the show is completely free.
The Fonda Theater will not big enough for The Record Company, a band I have seen years ago at their humble beginning, but I am sure they are still elevating rock, blues and soul to a bombastic level.
On Sunday 18th, John Mellencamp will bring a bunch of very special guests, such as Emmylou Harris, Carlene Carter, Lily & Madeleine, for his show at the Greek.
