L.A. BURNING, WEST COAST CONCERT PICKS, August 7th To 13th 2017

The Birth Defects

August is here and this means new Monday residencies, Nightmare Air start theirs at the Satellite with Iress, Slugs, Holy Wars, Tomahawk Training, and this is a lot of bands for the same night, but they look all interesting. Psychedelic space rock Pioneer 11 begin theirs at the Echo with Calvin Valentine, Tolliver and Versis, and Brian Hill & The Noh Starrs is at the Bootleg Bar with Drinking Flowers, Okey Dokey, Black Sea… so many bands, so little time!

Plus, glam hair metal Steel Panther is at The Roxy, and It’s A School Night! has Sidizen King/ Ruby Friedman Orchestra, the Outdoor Type and Baum at Bardot.

On Tuesday 8th, a few monster concerts such as Lady Gaga at the Forum, Kendrick Lamar at the Staples Center, but Priests is at Highland Park Ebell, and Zen Mother is at the Bootleg with Flying Hair, Ted Byrnes, Electric Sound Bath.

On Wednesday 9th, we still have Kendrick Lamar at the Staples Center and Lady Gaga at The Forum, but also Alt-J at the Shrine Auditorium (with Sohn). At the top of this, Gente de Zona with Anjelique Kidjo with play a Tribute to salsa and Celia Cruz at the Hollywood Bowl, and George Clinton will be at The Grammy Museum.

On Thursday 10th, again, big concerts at the Forum with legend Neil Diamond, while your favorite red head (not mine) Ed Sheeran is taking over the Staples Center. Alt-J is playing a second show at the Shrine Auditorium with Bishop Briggs and Sohn, Steve Miller Band & Peter Frampton are at the Greek Theatre, and Chilean singer songwriter Mon Laferte is playing at Twilight Concert Series with Buscabulla.

On Friday 11th, once again the big ones like Hans Zimmer at the Shrine Auditorium, Ed Sheeran playing his second show at the Staples Center, The Avett Brothers at the Greek Theatre with Dr. John and the Nite Trippers, and Diana Krall at the Hollywood Bowl. But more importantly, Tracy Bryant, who used to be the frontman of Corners (which had a very successful Echo residency a few years back), is returning solo at the Echo with Matt Lamkin and the Confirmations, Vanilla, Smokescreens.

Also, Steve Earle and the Dukes are at the Troubadour, with openers The Mastersons (also on Saturday but it seems that both nights are already sold out)

But I will have to choose between Hanni El Khatib, who is playing a free show at FigAt7th, and The Birth Defects who are playing at the Hi Hat with Buffalo Tooth, Friendship Commanders, Imaad Wasif…this is a though one!!

On Saturday 12th,, once again Neil Diamond will play The Forum, Ed Sheeran the Staples Center and Diana Krall the Hollywood Bowl, and it’s getting very boring! However, Nite Jewel, the petite of minimalist dance pop, is at the Teragram Ballroom, Melted Vinyl (I saw them once, and they are quite good) are at The Roxy with Love Ghost, Moollz, and Animal Super Species.

Also. Bitch + Sleigh Bells are at The Theatre At Ace Hotel as they are part of Sundance Next Fest, The B-52s will play a free show at Pershing Square with The Sh-Booms… And Yo La Tengo will play a free summer concert at Burton Chance Park.

On Sunday 13th, two legends, Deep Purple and Alice Cooper, will share the bill at the Greek theater
