I hope you had the pleasure to enjoy the usual residencies on Monday, I took the day off because of Echo Park Rising and I am very late with this weekly L.A. Burning, but these last 4 days were overwhelming.
There has been a lot of confusion regarding Dead Cross, they were supposed to play at the El Rey on Monday, cancelled their show because Mike Patton was involved in a accident, a bit earlier it was announced they would join the Melvins at the Echoplex on Tuesday (meaning tonight), and now Dead Cross is announcing a show at the El Rey tonight, probably to catch up with last night? So I guess Dead Cross can’t be at two places at the same time and I have no clue who is gonna be opening for the Melvins at the Echo, where the show was moved back. It’s obviously sold out, and if you bought a ticket for the Echoplex, it will be refunded, and it sucks!
Tonight, there is also a celebration of the Clash at Harvard and Stone, and it’s always a good time to celebrate the legendary UK band, especially a day after the birthday of Joe Strummer, who would have been 65 years old on August 21st.
On Wednesday 23rd, a band with a moniker for our times, Doom, is playing at the Regent with Blazing Eye and Apocalypse, Psychic IIIs, Numb.er (just saw them at Echo Park Rising) and Vinyl Williams are at the Echo. Cheap Tissue (whom I also saw at EPR) are at the Hi Hat, opening for Slaughter and the Dogs and Tenement Rats. Danish artist Myrkur will also perform a free show at Amoeba.
Saturday 26th is a busy one with the legendary Bryan Ferry at the Hollywood Bowl (Cécile McLorin is opening), Kaleo and The Shelters at the Wiltern (two young bands I saw at Make Music Pasadena years ago), Azelia Banks at the Fonda with Iconika X rated, and there is also a free show of Savoy Motel at the Getty.
Bodies of Water have a record release party at the Hi Hat with Joel Jerome (another EPR band) and Furniture Daniel
Potty Mouth will take over the Teragram Ballroom with local artists Colleen Green, Ramonda Hammer and Pouty.
Psychic Ills are playing at Zebulon with the loud and psychedelic Dommengang and Liza Thron
Green Slime with Les Grys Grys are at the Resident, and if I don’t know these bands you should go because the amazing Schizophonics are opening with The Loons..
Finally, Dirty Laundry TV is hosting an End of Summer Smackdown at a secret location, featuring a bunch of interesting indie bands plus an art show.
On Sunday 27th, Pink Martini and Charo are playing at the Hollywood Bowl, Toto and Pat Benatar are at the Greek, but of course, if you are more into the underground, you will see No Age, Gun Outfit, Sun Araw, r.r. barbadas at the Smell.
The Bootleg will host Clairvoid Fest, a mini festival to benefit Meristem, a center for young adults on the Autistic Spectrum, which will feature Ex-Sage, Dead Dawn, The Tissues, Band Aparte, Burning Palms, Cat Scan and Love Rites.
