There is no way I will ever buy Kurt Cobain’s ‘Montage of Heck: The Home Recordings’, for obvious reasons, so I will not be able to listen to the new songs, although they will probably leak as everything else. Alternative Nation had the privilege to receive a preview and they have posted the lyrics of the unreleased song untitled ‘She Only Lies’, which they describe as ‘a haunting song, with dark lyrics alluding to guilt and self-condemnation, along with shame towards the other person.’ Without listening to the song, I can’t comment on the great bass-line the author of the article is talking about, but the lyrics are very revealing:
“She Only Lies”
She only lies
Just to save my feelings
I cry inside
Just to make to her feel good
I hold inside
Guilt that isn’t real in
I find the lie
Just to burn my eyes
Oh, Oh
She only lies
Just to save my feelings
I only cry
Just to make her feel guilty
I cry in spite
Just to save my reasons
I know its right
Cause I wont hurt to die…
I love her
Oh I really hate her
And I know that you will hate her too
If you were given half the chance at all’
You also have to know this is the aural transcription as it was heard by someone, and he adds that ‘the sound quality makes it hard to guarantee that all of these lyrics are correct’… someone in the comments is suggesting that the line ’cause i won’t hurt to die’ is REALLY ’cause i want her to die’… which would be a bit too good to be true?
Still we get the idea, and it is very difficult not to think about Courtney Love when you read these lines, because which other woman with a reputation of being a big liar was in Kurt’s life? Even though songs cannot be considered as completely autobiographical, this one clearly describes a very difficult and complicated relationship, a love-hate game, a very painful marriage.
‘I think of this project as a companion to the film in that it tells the story in an aural manner,’ said Montage of Heck’s director Brett Morgan, ‘it was constructed to unfold with a loose narrative, to stand on its own. But if you have seen the film, that experience will deepen your understanding of the Montage of Heck album… and vice versa.’
It will deepen our understanding indeed, it’s only a song but Kurt really hated Courtney if I understand him correctly?

Hi there,
He might have actually written this about his mum for divorcing his dad. I’m a firm believer of Courtney getting him killed and stuff like that, but to me this song is more like an angry teenager talking about his mum. Anyway, I juat thought I would share my opinion.
Have a nice day,
Vivien
this song was written in 1985 before he even met courtney love lmfao
