Kanye West’s “The Life Of Pablo” Finally Out

I was astounded by how short The Life Of Pablo was, a mere 36 minutes in length on Friday (here), astounded but excited. And now you can  stream it on Tidal. And on Tidal at least, it is 58 minutes in length. You can’t buy it though, which is kinda weird. Also, the hot rumour is that you can download it for free on and I tried it, but all I got for my troubles was an interminable reading from Yasiin Bey.

We should have seen it coming, Kanye released the album right after his performance on SNL (“Ultra Beam Beams” and “Highlight”) and more is more. This is the third version I own and the best version I own, although the one from Friday was so self-contained and so quickly returning to the beginning that it became a hooky masterpiece. This is a longer, and better, still no weak links, album, but there is something less conceptually solid about it, Yeezus and 808s And Heartaches specifically work firstly as an album, and this is relatively scattered.

That may be a problem in the long run, it may get in the way when you try to put album # 7 in a sort of continuum. Also, now that West has broken off with writing partner, Rhymefest, it may be a last holla of greatness though the result of this break up won’t be felt for several years… but it will be felt. Rhymefest wrote “Jesus Walks”.

On Tidal you get Friday’s album, plus “Waves”, plus four more tracks. So now we can hear it and now we can say, Kanye West is in a whole other league. If there is a better album this year, I would be fascinating to discover what it is…
