Juggs at the Silverlake Lounge

Juggs at the Silverlake Lounge

When they do their own thing, rockstars’ progeny would probably prefer to avoid a mention of their famous father or mother. But how could they escape it? We have been there many times, since I have seen the children of many pop/rock stars, and each time there is this feeling of curiosity, what is his/her son/daughter up to? It’s refreshing to see that some of them don’t fall into the impossible comparison trap: they may follow in famous footsteps but they also know that there are many ways to make music, and this is certainly a good thing.

Last night, Brandon Rauch and Willem Wolfe Broad, two childhood friends who formed the duo JUGGS, played a short set at the Silverlake lounge presented by Creation Dream Machine, an homage to the work of Alan McGee and Creation Records. Needless to say, Willem is William Broad’s son, better known as Billy Idol of course, but I had seen them before and was interested in seeing them again. The duo has previously formed another band called FiM, which I have never seen, but I suppose that you could call JUGGS an electronic duo, although the use of guitars was a big part of the game.

Their attitude could not have been more laid back and low-key, after all this was the Silverlake Lounge, a modest-looking and independent bar where locals have a drink at night, but it is also a place with a long music history: bands like Rilo Kiley, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and the Silversun Pickups all started in this local pub.

JUGGS did not seem to be attached to any specific genre and they played a few of their songs accompanied by a guitar, a bass, a keyboard, and electronics. With steady beats, distorted to fuzzy guitar, and commanding vocals, their first song turned into a rather chaotic fuzz, while their second piece had dark vocals, a repetitive and infectious post-punk groove à la Oh Sees, made of electronic beats soon deranged by more distortion. ‘Dancing all the Way’ (?) was obviously a very danceable song, a looping keyboard dancefloor with good vibes. With the help of their ‘special friend Texas Bob’ on guitar, ‘Hypnotic’ had a bouncy, upbeat and fast vibe like a Fidlar tune, exulting a power-pop catchiness and some California-beach happy vibes. They added even more vocal harmonies during ‘Lucky Lady,’ another upbeat pop tune, and invited another friend to sing on the next one, a sort of kaleidoscopic collage flirting with noise, bringing together distorted guitars, exotic to tribal electro drums, burying vocals into a strange and chaotic haze of sounds. Interestingly, they did a totally unexpected cover, Pat Boone’s ‘Moody River,’ that I would certainly have not recognized if Willem hadn’t said: ‘This is a Pat Boone cover.’ It is a very dark song if you read the lyrics, but they executed it with an almost upbeat mood and the same laid-back attitude that they had adopted from the beginning. To close their very eclectic collection of indie pop, they played ‘As If,’ the only song of the night that they have officially released, and the most electro-ethereal piece of the set, slow and melancholic with fat beats and dreamy vocals sounding like a lazy day at the beach.

It’s always unusual to see the son of a Rockstar doing his own thing and being totally humble and unassuming. The duo is signed to Creation 23 records, the last venture of influential music industry executive Alan McGee, and I suppose we can expect more music from JUGGS soon.
