Japan X Will Play At Coachella: They Are Huge In Japan

Japan X

In Los Angeles, we have our own X band, there are the XX from England, but it seems there also is a X Japan, and no offence to Exene and John but X Japan is really big, they are actually the biggest rock group in Japanese history, and if you attend Coachella this year, you will be able to see them.

X Japan are PATA on guitar, HEATH on bass, TOSHI on vocals, SUGIZO on violin and guitar, but especially YOSHIKI, the composer of the music who is equally playing drums and piano. The band is legendary in their native country and if they will make their first Coachella appearance next April, they are no stranger to festivals in the US, as they participated in Lollapalooza in 2010 and headlined Madison Square Garden in 2014. But 2018 will see the band’s creative leader YOSHIKI’s dramatic return to the stage after an emergency surgery last May to replace a cervical vertebral disc. Their Coachella appearances will be Japan X’s first major concert since the group headlined SSE Wembley Arena in London last March.

When it comes to big, Japan X embodies rock star with all its attribute and attitude, they have sold over 30 million albums, singles and videos combined and have sold out Japan’s 55,000-seat Tokyo dome 18 times! The Japan X phenomenon was documented in WE ARE X, which won awards at the Sundance and SXSW Film Festivals and was called by the New York Times ‘a fascinating and assured documentary’.

After watching the trailer, it really looks like these guys can put on a very flamboyant rock show, at the cross section of metal, glam and punk, while they receive praises from the likes of Kiss’ Gene Simmons and Marilyn Manson and push the limits of a rock show. YOSHIKI’s drumming style is so intense and aggressive that he has often ended up in pain on the floor by the end of a show, and his management has said that the injuries he had sustained ‘would force a professional rugby player to retire’. X probably stands for eXtreme.

The band is currently in the studio completing their first full-length album in over 20 years, now set for release in 2018, and there is the possibility they will play parts of it on Saturday, April 14 and Saturday, April 21 during their sets at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival .
