Falling Apart: The Fall cancelled their postponed from this year to next’s residency at Baby’s All Right, due to Mark E. Smith’s ill health. Pictures from his performances last month in the UK found a very ill looking yet if you just listen to the aural of the shows he looks great. I interviewed Mark decades ago and, despite his reputation, I found him very pleasant. I think all we big time Fall fans couldn’t be more upset. According to “…Hand The DJ,” “Last night’s show in Bristol was canceled at the last minute due to Smith’s failing health. The band told the sold out crowd at Fiddlers that Smith had recently undergone surgery and though he had made the trip from Manchester to Bristol, he was too ill to leave his hotel room. Smith was hospitalized earlier this year for respiratory illness. He later was forced to cancel The Fall’s U.S. shows after doctors advised him that traveling would negatively impact his ability to recuperate. Smith returned to the stage last month and performed in a wheelchair – fans reported he sounded great and was in good spirits.”

POTUS: While freeing business to compete on every level, Trump has gutted Federal safeguards, while doing god knows what or why, Trump has threatened allies and less than allies alike for the spectacularly embarrassing sight of the majority of the world ganging up against the USA. My problem with this particular case is I am not entirely against the idea of Jerusalem being the capital of Israel, with Israeli rule over a Holy city with access for old. It has been a long while since Geneva, maybe it is time Palestinian’s laughingly named government got their act together.

New Music: Two huge new releases today, Gucci Mane and the Quavo and Travis Scott. The Gucci is practically an  EP at a brusque 30 minutes, and the least pop thing he has done since he got outta stir (Grade: B+), Q&T is just about woke, and “Modern Slavery,” which opens with a sample from Otis Redding’s “Cigarettes and Coffee,” is a down lo  trap built masterwork, the rest of the album is a touch too dark for my taste (Grade: B).

Old Music: I am still not ready to deal with the first Impressions album but I do have good news for those who find my knowledge of r&b suspect, Tomas Doncker has agreed to collaborate on it with me!

Immigration: “To address rising numbers of border crossings, officials may begin detaining parents apart from their children, a change in practice that immigrant advocates criticized as cruel.” All the USA is right now is cruel.

Shape Of Us: The terrific most streamed song of all time, “Shape Of You,” started with a keyboard lick, which Ed Sheeran got from producer Steve Mac and added a rhythm track on his guitar track, because, as Mac put it  (here), Ed was too impatient to wait for Steve to find one.  The video is so worth watching and the big shock is that Steve wrote the lick and Ed wrote the beat. It is also interesting tp discover Ed lacks attention span and patience.

Concerts: After the amazingly depressing Billy Joel gig on Thursday (Grade: B-), let’s hear it for the upcoming twofer: Phish and The Pointer Sisters. I got a ticket for J. Balvin (you know him from ” Mi Gente” featuring Beyonce) and Luis Fonsi (I am still shocked that Fonsi’s Demi Lovato song didn’t break pop), at Radio City, February 9th.
