Music tastes are very personal, they reveal a lot about yourself, they are an entry into your soul. After dissecting the presidents and ex-presidents’ musical tastes, I was curious about Ivanka Trump’s own favorites. She is her father’s favorite, so she was deeply influential these past 4 years. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand her, I can’t stand her cascade of straight blonde hair and surgically altered nose, I can’t stand the way she walks with her high heels as if she were the new Nazi Barbie in chief. I can’t stand her total devotion to her father, in order to stay in power. Just a few hours ago, she tweeted about the new Pfizer’s vaccine: ‘Once again, our President defied the expectations of the “experts” and delivered on his ambitious goal of having a safe + effective #COVID19 #vaccine for the American people by the end of this year! Promises Made, Promises Kept’… didn’t you vomit a bit in your mouth? We all know that, first, Trump has nothing to do with this new effort, second, the vaccine will not be ready before mid-2021, at the earliest. But Ivanka cannot care less, she knows what she is doing, and with her movie look of the cold calculating bitch, she is filling everyone’s expectations.
But is Ivanka listening to music? Does she have favorite songs? Do we even care?
According to Bustle, she does: At a Trump rally in Nashville in 2018, country singer Trace Adkins performed his 2006 hit ‘Ladies Love Country Boys’ with a shoutout to Ivanka. A viewer of The Apprentice even tweeted that Ivanka had told Adkins, who was a contestant on the show in 2008, that it ‘it was her favorite song of his.’ The tune is about women, who, despite their parents’ high expectations, are attracted to ‘country boys’ with awful tastes in music: ‘You can train em, you can try to teach ’em right from wrong/But it’s still gonna turn ’em on/And they go riding in the middle of a pickup truck/Blaring Lynyrd Skynyrd, yelling, ‘Turn it up!’’ Whether Ivanka recognizes herself in this song is hard to tell, all I can say is that Jared Kushner is the antithesis of a country boy. According to Cosmopolitan, their wedding song was David Gray’s ‘This Year’s Love,’ a song written for the movie with the same title, which tends to prove that Ivanka thinks she is starring in a movie.
But there’s more to Ivanka, could she have a soul after all? According to the Daily News, she revealed in her mother’s memoir, ‘Raising Trump,’ that she had a punk phase in the ‘90s, she loved grunge rock bands, and instead of her current boring wardrobe, she was wearing ripped corduroy jeans and flannel shirts and even dyed her hair blue. She said she cried a full day when Kurt Cobain died in 1994. Ivanka was very young at the time: ‘It was a shock and I was distraught,’ she wrote. ‘Mom had no idea who Kurt Cobain was, and she sympathized only so much.’
It’s very hard to imagine today’s Ivanka crying after Cobain’s death, but she was only 12. Whatever phase she had when she was a teenager, her current tastes seem very different but also extremely eclectic. How do I know? She uses Spotify and has shared 24 public playlists, mostly embracing current pop, electronic, hip hop, and even indie pop/rock. There are tons of artists listed but among them, you can notice Sam Smith, BANKS, Kimbra, FKA twigs, HAIM, Bleachers, Disclosure, Broods, Twenty One Pilots, James Blake, Cold War Kids, Aphex Twin, Rosyln, BØRNS, San Hunt, Selena Gomez, Carly Rae Jepsen, She & Him, Maroon 5, Leon Bridges, Ella Fitzgerald, Justin Bieber, Calvin Harris, Lorde, Mayer Hawthorne, Florence + The Machine, Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Grimes, The Roots, John Legend, OK Go, Azealia Banks, Katy Perry, Passion Pit, Britney Spears, Bastille, Snoop Dogg, New Order, Outkast, MGMT, R.Kelly, Cults, Miley Cyrus, Pitbull, Kesha, Dr, Dre, Snopp Dogg, Santigold, Ellie Goulding, Charli XCX, Coldplay, Rihanna, Phoenix, Avicii, Lady Gaga, the Chicks, John Mayer, Eddei Vedder, the Lumineers, The Civil Wars, Ray LaMontagne, Incubus, Mumford & Sons, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Taylor Swift….to cite only a few! I even noticed a few tracks by Nick Drake, Paul Simon, Ryan Adams, Iron and Wine, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Sigur Ros, Rufus Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Spoon, Ted Leo, Beck, Lykke Li, Belle & Sebastian, José Gonzales…
Ivanka’s playlists are eclectic lists including not only pop, hip hop, electronics but also jazz, indie, and folk rock. They are very long, and there is one for every season and occasion: fall, winter, cocktails, run, holiday party, spring break, weekend morning walk to work. Does this mean Ivanka is interested in music and finally has a soul? Or is it another series of trophies for her perfect life? It’s difficult to really tell her tastes based on these playlists as they certainly are all over the place: there is an only-country playlist, but also an only-hip hop dance playlist, so the only conclusion I can draw is that Ivanka’s tastes are very eclectic.
Who knows if she really made these playlists herself – does she have that amount of time to dedicate to entertainment? I thought she was a very busy woman. But in case she does, Ivanka is either trying to impress people or to audition for a DJ job.
