Cry – Anne-Marie – The great Rudimental singer (completely awesome when I saw her with them at Summerstage years ago) has a natural hit here, the verse is good and the chorus is pure sugar but the post-mortem on the romance is kinda tragic and kinda real life, as she disses him: “2% my lover, 98% was waste of time”.
Roses By My Side – Cicada Rhythm – Here the folkies get their Americana on with a Willie Nelson style beauty.
Crazy, Classic, Life – Janelle Monáe – I swear this is a masterpiece, it sounds like the most important song of 2018 the same way “The Mess We Made” was the most important song of 2016. It has the scope of a vision of how life is lived, how to exist as a free person: “I don’t need another ruler, all of my friends are Kings” is the singled greatest line from 2018.
Coming Home – Keith Urban, Julia Michaels – With its Merle Haggard sample right on top, Keith rides it till the end of the song on what amounts to his best moment since, I dunno, “Without You” in 2010.
Famous Tracheotomies – Okkervil River – Will might not mean to be funny, but this song about celebrities who had the terrible procedure (Gary Coleman, Mary Wells, etc) on this song which exists somewhere between The Decemberists and The Mountain Goats, is quite amusing
Put Your Lovin Where Your Mouth Is – Poo Bear, Jennifer Lopez – J Lo hasn’t sounded poppoer in years, it’s been all Latin dance all the time so it is nice to hear this relaxed dance ballad.
Paranoid – Post Malone – A paranoid man makes paranoid plans is a great line and the song is as hooky as possible.
You Hate The Title – Speedy Ortiz – The album couldn’t work off this song, where Sadie usess off kilter melodies and on point vocals to the greater good. Speedy Ortiz constantly get in their own way…
Freedom – Steve Angello- Good house beat plus the great Pusha T…
All Saints Day – Van Morrison – A jazzy take on Van’s terrific Hymns To The Silence song, this is the second time Van has returned to it recently and for good reason, it is his best unknown album and while I prefer the original, this still ain’t bad.
Right Or Wrong (feat. Future) – YoungBoy Never Broke Again – I wish it didn’t take two minutes to get to Future, but I am happy to hear from him anyway.
