Interpol Announce New Album ‘Marauder’… Listen To Their Single ‘The Rover’

Interpol’s press conference in Mexico City

Without any notice, Interpol have announced a new album ‘Marauder’, which should be out on August 24th, via Matador Records, at the peak of summer.

Produced by Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, The Flaming Lips. Café Tacuba, Mogwai,  MGMT, Tame Impala…) ‘Marauder’ is their 6th LP, their first album since 2014 ‘El Pintor’ and its cover art features a photograph taken by Garry Winogrand in 1973 showing U.S. Attorney General Elliot Richardson, a prominent figure in the Watergate scandal, who resigned rather than obey President Nixon’s order…

I would have loved to live stream their press conference this morning from Mexico City (where they unveiled a mural with the album artwork), but the good news is that you can still watch it here.

In a press release, frontman Paul Banks declared: ‘Marauder is a facet of myself. That’s the guy that fucks up friendships and does crazy shit. He taught me a lot, but it’s representative of a persona that’s best left in song. In a way, this album is like giving him a name and putting him to bed.’
‘This record is where I feel touching on real things that have happened to me are exciting and evocative to write about…. I think in the past, I always felt autobiography was too small a thing for me to reference. I feel like now, I’m able to romanticize parts of my own life.”

As expected, they have already released their first single, ‘The Rover’, described by Paul Banks as the most immediate and accessible song on the album. The track is rather straightforward, driven by a raw and simplistic energy, with no complicated or meandering song structure, but, with it’s back to basic, it’s also a very Interpol track, with that savant mix of emotion and toughness, anxiety and hooky melody, burying Paul Banks’ signature vocals into a menacing determination blending with dancing beats.

Interpol have immediately announced a few upcoming dates in Los Angeles, Berkeley, Tokyo, London, Copenhagen, Paris, NYC

Listen to ‘The Rover’ below, and here is ‘Marauder’ tracklist:
