Iconic Rock Songs That Defined Generations

You can hardly walk through the streets without hearing different speakers playing a rock song but rock didn’t start with that much fame. Rock songs began like a simple thing in New York City many years back but today it has evolved into a multifaceted sub-genre. Rock songs have impacted and influenced popular culture such as fashion, lifestyle, politics, and lots more and it has inspired lots of people, the younger generation especially, to be innovative in their craft.

In this blog post, we will take you down the memory lane of some iconic rock songs that defined generations and are still being played today despite the emergence of new rock songs. It is quite difficult to pick a few songs from the list of millions of rock songs but we have put together some mind-blowing and thrilling rock songs that are just too good to be excluded from the list. “Be My Baby” — Ronnie Spector (Ronettes), 1963.

“Be My Baby” was one of the most played Rock songs in the ’60s and it’s still heard today. At age 18, the Spanish singer, Ronnie Spector (nee Bennett) recorded the song “Be My Baby” with Phil Spector. This song by Ronnie expresses a form of young love and it remains one of the iconic songs that introduced drum intros into the history of Rock songs. Although Ronnie died at 78 in 2022, Ronnie’s sweet voice still lives on.

“Whole Lotta Love” —- Led Zeppelin, 1969

Led Zeppelin is a pro when it comes to singing Rock songs and one of his iconic Rock songs in the ’60s is the famous Rock song “Whole Lotta Love”. Far back in the ’60s, Led Zeppelin veered off the regular drummer bass style for singing Rock and instead chose to create a guitar sound for his Rock song which history would never forget.

“Stairway to Heaven” —– Led Zeppelin, 1971.

Among the most iconic  70s rock songs is “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. “Stairway to Heaven” is memorable for its iconic guitar lyrics and interesting lyrics. Although Led Zeppelin produced several Rock songs, this particular song remains one of the most popular and celebrated Rock songs in history.

“Born To Run” —– Bruce Springsteen, 1975.

Bruce started this song in a monotone manner with a faint voice and initially, it didn’t sound like a Rock song but slowly, he transitioned into the wall of sound technique. The beats from the bass, drum, keyboard, guitar, sax, and other instruments gave this song a level of fame beyond the ’70s. “Born To Run” by Bruce Springsteen is a song of ode to his many unachieved American dreams and it reveals his desperation as he drives through Highway 9, the road that cuts across his hometown, Freehold to Jersey.

“Another Brick in the Wall” —– Pink Floyd, 1979.

“Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd, is one of the most famous songs produced by this iconic band. This song is famous for its interesting lyrics and iconic soundscapes that perfectly describe the frustrated state of a generation.

“London Calling”  —– The Clash, (1979).

The Clash songs are famous for their muscular lyrics and powerful accompanying instruments, the drum beats especially which gave them their distinction, and “London Calling” is not any different. “London Calling” is iconic for its powerful lyrics, captivating chorus, and interesting beats which thrilled its audience.  It became so popular at the time to the extent that radio stations played it regularly.

“Once in a Lifetime” —– Talking Heads, (1980)

“Once in a Lifetime” by Talking Heads is an iconic Rock song produced by the famous Brian Eno’s studio which is credited for the magical styles in the song. This Rock song is an ode to separation and has powerful lyrics alongside an excellent delivery.

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” —— Nirvana, (1991).

You cannot mention iconic Rock songs that were prominent in the ’90s without mentioning Nirvana. Nirvana is an influential music band that rocked the world with their Rock song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” which portrayed the sound of grunge rock. This song has a catchy chorus with heavy guitar beats alongside its sweet lyrics that became a thing on the lips of youths at the time and remains as potent as it was then.

“Fell in Love With a Girl” —– The White Stripes, (2001).

If you really want to know how falling in love feels like then “Fell in Love With a Girl” is the Rock song you need to listen to by the White Stripes. “The White Stripes” shows a reflection of other dimensions of love from the playing of the guitar strings to the youthful energy that sweeps you off your feet.


From the few iconic Rock songs mentioned above that defined generations, it is safe to say that Rock songs have always been the life of any party right from inception.
