Happy Anniversary!!

14 years ago on this very day our forefather Iman Labebedi put finger to keyboard and created  A super long named website that shoved its way into the growing ‘blog’ scene.  In these 14 years we have experienced so many situations that I thought this a good time to write a nice reflection piece.

In the beginning, well when I hopped on at the suggestion of Robert Nevin, I wrote my very first review of Weezer.  I have dyslexia, I don’t know grammer for shit. I have no writing skill I have no vast musical knowledge- point blank I had no authority to critique anything but next thing ya know I’m a regular churning out 5 posts a day to make sure we had 20 fresh posts every fucking day.

It was grueling and having no musical direction- it made my head swim.  Soon we were joined by Michael Nessing.  A music freak who actually had some real knowledge of all genres.  The three of us spent our workdays chit chatting in our comment section, it felt like a living room with us pals just hanging out.  I remember the first outsider comment, rather than being thrilled I felt invaded.  This was our space- but suddenly, people were reading.

So many writers have graced this site, so many cringe worth memories- but through it Iman steered the ship, kept the consistent raw atmosphere and invited anyone who had a thought into the fold as contributing writer. Woody, Henry, Marlena, Cathy, Miriam, Mary, Wyatt and the now famous Alyson, so many names so many brains so many posts.

We learned how to get on guest lists, interviewed our idols, and chased our idols down. We used mediums to reach the dead, we were relentless in our pursuit for truth.  Alyson dug so hard on the Elliot Smith conspiracy I always feared she would just exhume the body and autopsy it herself.  She’s a fucking legend, I salute her, she’s still at it.

We used our long website name as a door opener.  Our contact list grew, our attitudes sucked.  We loved, we hated, and we held nothing back.  Spell check was for pussies and if you didn’t like it- well you could fuck right off.  It was pure magic it was modern day punk and it was a glorious thing.

Readership grew, our tech savvy didn’t we changed servers we changed logos we pushed social media, we rallied on.  Iman never gave up he was tireless, and he is timely. The dude is in his 60s and know more about modern music than my 26 year old kid- who wrote for age 13.

We pissed artists off from Everclear to The Kings of Leon they all kicked back at us.  We kept going.

I’ve forgotten a lot- but I remember a lot. Mostly I remember Iman’s deadlines, diligence and absolute dedication.

It’s not anymore, it moved on as most of us have.  But just like all evolutions some of us will always miss the ‘old days’ and the ‘way it was’.  I hardly recognize it now but I do check in now and then. When I do there are cringey moments, there are gut wrenching moments and there are hilariously “wtf is that” moments.  Today I tip my hat to the driving force of the website that changed my world.  Viva Le now lets go piss someone off.
