Gov Ball 2022 Set Times And Recommendations

As always with Gov Ball, the openers are a a bit of a wash out (though I saw first sets of the days by Kae Tempest and Jessie Reyez in the past), and the headliners are more or less not worth the hassle. Also… I tend to miss one day a week and if I chose to, I’ll miss Saturday…

Now, if you want to see everything go here but if you wanna pick and choose, in the immortal words os Jason Isbell to me at Gov Ball a coupla years ago: “let’s do this…”

Friday, June 10th

215p – 3p – Samia – the queer icon given to first rate covers

330p – 430p – beabadoobee – the Filipina via London is the sine qua non for bedroom pop and a superb songwriter and arranger

415p – 515- JPEGMAFIA – the best art rapper around

520p – 620p – Skepta – after Stormzy the best UK drill rapper

630p – 730p – Migos – last time I saw em live they were opening for Drake and blowing him off stage (here), still boogie after all these years

730p – 830p – Jack Harlow – the teen heartthrob of the moment, plus Pitchfork gave him a 2.9 so how bad can he be?

845p – 10p – Kid Cudi – headlining, but headliners are too crazy audience wise…

Saturday, June 11th

330p – 430p – Tove Lo – the Swedish popster returns

415p – 515p – Shaq as a rapper – a large one

545p -645p – Denzel Curry – he was terrific opening for Billie Eilish at Radio City in 2019 (here) and while I run hot and cold on record, on stage he is excellent

7p – 8p – Roddy Ricch – he was pretty good with Post Malone on SNL last week

845p – 10p – Halsey – she was great the last time I saw here at Gov Ball (here) but headlining?

Sunday, June 12th, 2022

245p – 345p – Soccer Mom – the indie rock star, she doesn’t do it for me but maybe on stage?

415p -515p – 100 Gecs – the hyper-pop duo are the highlight of the weekend

520p -620p – she is not J Balvin (who headlined last year) but she is still impressive and her latest album is first rate pop reggaeton

545p – 645p – Japanese Breakfast – again, good word of mouth but I haven’t bought in yet

630p – 730p – Glass Animals – a hugely important performance for the UK “Heat Waves” guys -do they make it all the way?

730p – 830p – Jazmine Sullivan – one of the best r&b women around and Heaux Tales put her back on top

830p – 945p – Playboy Carti – the fashion plate rapper with his own set!

845p – 10p – J Cole – Why would they put Cole up against Carti?
