Goldenvoice Puts Arroyo Seco Weekend On Hold For 2019, Announces Pasadena Daydream Festival

Pasadena Daydream Festival

The music festival market is presumably too saturated these days and it seems that 2019 will not see another Arroyo Seco Weekend! After 2 splendid years – last year Neil Young, Jack White, and Robert Plant were headlining – the Pasadena music festival is on a hiatus.

Around May, it seemed something was not exactly right as the lineup had still not been announced, a bad sign as the festival is taking place at the end of June. They were rumors the festival would be postponed till the end of the summer, but instead, Goldenvoice has announced Pasadena Daydream Festival, to be happening on August 31st. This new festival will take place at the same location than Arroyo Seco, Brookside at the Rose Bowl, and despite the fact it will be a somewhat a more modest one-day event, many people could see it as a sort of substitute for this year.

However, Rose Bowl General Manager Darryl Dunn disagrees as he declared to PasadenaNow:  I think it’s a different event, I don’t think it’s a replacement’.

The good news for all the goths out there is that Pasadena Daydream Festival will bring a much more post-punk/alt-rock/metal trend than the very classic-rock Arroyo Seco, with a definitive ‘80s vibe as the legendary Cure are headlining. Also part of the lineup are Pixies, Deftones, Mogwai, Throwing Muses, The Joy Formidable, Chelsea Wolfe, The Twilight Sad, Emma Ruth Rundle, Kaelan Mikla.

According to estimates, Goldenvoice was anticipating a daily attendance of 40,000 for Arroyo Seco, with a potential growth up to 83,000 by year 5, whereas last year attendance was rather around 25,000 per day, and this may have been a reason to put it on hold for this year.

Hopefully, Arroyo Seco will be re-launched in 2020, since Goldenvoice has a ten-year contract with the venue, and is set to operate each year through 2026. ‘Arroyo Seco Weekend is a great event and like I said, we’re excited about it [coming] back again soon. In the meantime, we’re going to have some wonderful events in summer of 2019,’ added Dunn. This one-year hiatus may be a good thing after all, since we have to question the necessity of all these festivals with copycat-lineups, and we may have reached a point where promoters are not too eager to run a large-scale festival every year.

General admission tickets for Pasadena Daydream Festival are $150, VIP tickets are $300.
