Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 7-8-16 – 7-14-16

Friends (featuring Bon Iver) – Francis And The Lights –  Kanye West is in the video: “He heard the song and he liked it. The video’s called “Friends,” and it’s about friends. He and Justin are friends, and me and Francis are friends, and Justin and Francis are friends. It just felt right.”. The song, by falsetto Francis Farewell Starlite,is a Curtis Mayfield vocalish, symphonic but simple ode to friendship, and a very pretty song though the video is where it is at – B+

Spiritual – Jay Z – “The sins of the flesh are manifest…” as Dr. W. A. Criswell once noted (the Bible gave us “works of the flesh”) , and that opening quote is pretty cool, it is the best thing about Jay Z’s reaction to another black man being shot down by a police officer. The chorus is terrible, all of the words on that doesn’t click, but the rap is strong and the sentiment welcome – B

Right Now – Jeff Beck –  Rosie Bones gives the songs a 70s classic rock vocal performance and Jeff and new collaborator and Carmen Vandenberg adds some shadings, but it is Jeff’s guitar breaks that makes it of interest… not VERY of interest – C+

Ole – John Newman – Newman has a great voice but on Calvin Harris’ backhanded Taylor Swift slam (taken from the position of the new man in her life), which has a sunny coolness but not much else – C+

Just The 2 Of Us – Keith Sweat, Takiya Mason – The production has the synth drum hip hop production endemic in more pop, but Keith sounds exactly the way you want him to, except, the drums keep getting in the way – B

Happiness Acoustic – NEEDTOBREATHE – Not perfect except for one way, within genre it is well and above the top of the class, a pretty good pursuit of happiness track but this being CCM, happiness is defined as God, and they make it stick(y) – B+

Higher – The Naked And Famous – New Zealander 80s inspired pop band deliver more of the same – C+

Ruin – Shawn Mendes – I am as far from a fan as you can get but this is as close to a soul hit as this guy has ever gotten, a heartbreaker – B
