Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 6-15-18 – 6-21-18

Growing Pains – Alessia Cara – Yeah, growing up is a pain but if this is singer songwriter confessional self-portrait, the sound is Pop And Oak’s patented reverberating beats. It comes together well – B+

In Cold Blood (feat. Pusha T) – Twin Shadow Version – alt-J, Pusha T, Twin Shadow – Powerful new version, alt-j sound cooler than Radiohead and Pusha T is the rapper of the moment – B

If Only – Andrea Bocelli – Every time I’ve seen him live I’ve wanted to slit my wrists, he is so overwrought. I did like the Ed Sheeran duet but not enough to make this Middle Of The Road stuff listenable… there are also versions in Italian and Spanish – C

Junior High – Baka Not Nice – OVO artist from Toronto, trap backing, sing speak rap – C+

I’m a Mess – Bebe Rexha – A lot of her stuff is the essence of generic, this is better than that crappy girl power song from last week, the “that’s what my therapist says” is a funny line – B-

Do It All Over – BONNIE X CLYDE – Very catchy EDM -I really love EDM when it is this melodic, when the song’s tune carries it and not just the 808s – B

Mi Sorpresa Fuiste Tú – Calibre 50 – Old school Latin pop -a nice one – B

Have It – Chanel West Coast – I interviewed Chanel a coupla years ago and she was just adorable and I never ever disliked her flow… her voice lacks something, a touch too whitebread. But otherwise, this is a goodie – B

Kanye’s Bday Song – Chaos Chaos, Rick and Morty “To celebrate ‘Ye’s 41st birthday, wife Kim Kardashian West enlisted the help of Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland to honor the superfan with a special song. Featuring the show’s titular characters, the jaunty jam tells a story of Rick attempting to sneak into Kanye’s bedroom while Morty, despite his protestations, follows along.” – B+

Fishin’ – Chris Lane – The haircut has to go but this is a pleasant summery romance song – B

Crush – Cigarettes After Sex – Ambient slow and swoony beaut – B+

Reason to Drink – Cole Swindell – Good little tock band, good chorus, nice idea as well – B

Zum Zum – Daddy Yankee, R.K.M & Ken-Y, Arcangel – Old school reggaeton and the title is a terrific hook they could’ve even used more – B

Keeping Score (feat. Kelly Clarkson) – Dan + Shay, Kelly Clarkson – Kelly has been busy, she sounds a touch subdued here but it is as good as anything Dan + Shay ever do… that “i’m only human” stuff doesn’t work – B-

Gold Rush – Death Cab for Cutie – Nostalgia hits Ben like a wall that he bops to on a very hooky beat and a melody that is like the movement of time – A-

That’s A Lifestyle – Dirty Projectors – I hated em at Gov Ball but it was the wrong band in the wrong place and the intricacies of  David Longstreth’s songs got lost in the bustle… this is a very lovely song indeed – B

The Breakup Song – Francesca Battistelli – A tasty piece of CCM goes ethically mainstream, Jesus doesn’t make an appearance, though it is a miracle it isn’t worse – C+

Got Friends – GoldLink, Miguel – Mainstream r&b plus rap, but Goldlink sometimes feels major and Miguel is on his game on this very catchy collab – B

Fire Flies – Gorillaz – What a miserable fuckface, awful brooding sound melange – MUST TO AVOID – D+

Who You Say I Am – Studio Version – Hillsong Worship – Get off your knees, you morons – D+

Woop Woop – Kid Ink – A really catchy piece of r&b bubblegum summer time feel good track of weed and seduction – B+

Born To Be Yours (with Imagine Dragons) – Kygo, Imagine Dragons – This should work a little better, Kygo is the man on pop tracks,  here his voice is just strong enough, Imagine Dragons are huge (I am seeing em on Tuesday at MSG), the break is house 101 and puts me off, but it ain’t terrible – C+

Calypso – Luis Fonsi, Stefflon Don – In the battle for crossover power, Luis had “Despacito” even while J Balvin had Beyonce yet Balvin is the name to drop… so why is this better than anything on Balvin’s new album? – B+

Ocean (feat. Khalid) – Martin Garrix, Khalid – Martin is always major and Khalid just into his 20s is a go to guy for soulfulness vibes, this one ain’t bad but it ain’t much either – C+

Mal de la Cabeza – Mau y Ricky, Becky G – Brothers who can ride the distance between reggaeton and retro Latin with ease, Becky G is always good for a chorus or two – B

Bed (feat. Ariana Grande) – Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande – Sexd banger by Nicki and Ariana, easily the poppiest thing Nicki has offered this year, you can imagine it breaking pop – B

Rich Sex (feat. Lil Wayne) – Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne – “I like money more than dick, nigga, that’s a fact. You think pussy’s everything? Well, let’s have a chat…” This is a completely addictive piece of extended cynicism and ear candy, Weezy is nasty and Nicki is nastier – SINGLE OF THE WEEK A-

Cash On It – O.T. Genasis – Atlanta rapper in the cocaine delivery business obsessed with broccoli – B-

It’s Complicated – Sam Huber – Finnish soul man with his catchiest pop swinger ever –  A-

A Perfect Miracle – Spiritualized – Gorgeous little song from the 90s stalwart who are still floating in space and this song has the trance future past build up we are used – B+

I’m Your Man – Spiritualized – A bluesy, classic rockish mod doesn’t swing it – C+

Lest We Forget – Tim Mason – A mammoth house build up rattles your ears with an all melody thrust – B

Dance To This (feat. Ariana Grande) – Troye Sivan, Ariana Grande – I just got a tixd to see him at Radio City, this is another somewhere between singer songwriter and sex toy , this is a chill summer track and a  coin flip between “Woop Woop” and this for for the better summer song  B+
