Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 4-6-18 – 4-12-18

A$AP Forever – A$AP Rocky, Moby – I realise that Rocky is on so many songs as a featured artist that it feels like he hasn’t been away but it has been three years since his masterful  At Long Last A$AP and the difference between being featured is crystal clear on this brilliant return where he plans to fuck up the game and does so with an inspired Moby sample from his “Porcelain” – A-

Anna Wintour – Azealia Banks – Terrific song by a woman who stands shoulder to shoulder with Nicki Minaj  and Cardi B, this eagerly anticipated track adds house to r&b to rap and comes through with extreme power and cleverness . There are so many elements here -the bridge is insane vocoder foghorn stuff and the verse that follows is perfect flow  –  SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A

Into My Arms – Band of Horses – I am not a fan of the Americana rock band stuff these guys are selling me, nit this is a fabulous cover of Nick Cave’s atheist  romantic love song – B+

Dark Spring – Beach House – Third song makes me sorta regret getting a ticket for the gig at King’s Theatre -I remembered that what I don’t like is these guys ambient soundscapes for any length of time – C+

God Inna Mi Heart – Beenie Man – Nice one, the second perfect dance hall track off the newbie dropping soon – B+

Maintain – Belly, Nav – The protestant work ethic meets rap – B

Over It – Bullet For My Valentine – I used to  think my huge problems with rock might be partially a matter of evolving taste, but I love these songs till the whining wretched vocal… the singer on song after song is abysmal – C+

One Kiss (with Dua Lipa) – Calvin Harris – The chorus is so strong I assumed it was a cover, but no this is just an old cylinders pop hit, and that chorus is simply great – B+

Drip (feat. Migos) – Cardi B – Where’s the video? – A

Must’ve Been (feat. DRAM) – Chromeo – My feelings about Mr. Broccoli are well documented ever since he was the best thing on the Kendrick tour last year. Chromeo are pretty good, nothing great. But this is a great dance track with a terrific vocal- B+

Rock And Roll Transplant (feat. Steve Lukather, Jim Keltner and Chad Smith) – Derek Smalls – Quite a who’s who on this record, which is so funny I forgot to laugh, unless you are in the market for “rock and roll never forgets but sometimes it has trouble remembering” – C+

Nice For What – Drake _ I admit that I am always late for Drake, it can take a week for one of his songs to kick in but here is twoi questions 1 _ Why have two of hip hop’s biggest artist used “Ex-Factor” on major new releases? And why is Drake’s the lesser of the two? – B

Black Hole Son – Dr. Octagon –  Kool Keith, Dan the Automator, and DJ Qbert, and the adventures of a gynecologist with nothing about Chris Cornell of course as the superstars return – B

I’ll Wait For You – Jason Aldean – same ol country blues stuff – C+

Gassed Up – Jauz, DJ Snake – House is as house does  with a vocal that sounds like a snare – B-

Still Dipset (feat. Juelz Santana) – Jim Jones – They’re back, rapping about nothing much but Santana’s rhymes are ice – B

A Good Night – John Legend, Bloodpop – 70s disco with a shot of the Bee Gees “More Than A Woman” – B-

The Tracers – Johnny Marr – The new one will be a concept album, that’s the bad news, but this rolling seas guitar track harkens back to the 60s and is the better for it – B

Frozen – Joyner Lucas – Really? An anti-sext and drive track??? – C+

Get Along – Kenny Chesney – “Can’t we all get along”? A pleasant and unassuming give the world a coke, with a sweet guitar solo – C+

Violet City – Mansionair – Ho hun Ozzie DJs with a ho hun track – C

Tokyo Bay – Nick Lowe – rockabilly Lowe 101 – B+

Graceland – MK’s KC Lights Remix – Paul Simon – Odd remix, doesn’t work mostly because the song is complete as it was – B-

You Can Call Me Al – Groove Armada Dub Redemption – Paul Simon – Given looping whole new levels of meeting, at least this one is serious about remixing beyond the pale as it gloms onto “redemption” – B

Better Than You – Petal – Catchy little indie rocker – B

Hard 2 Face Reality – Poo Bear, Justin Bieber  – While it is true the Bieb has only one verse, it is gorgeous – B+

Don’t Let Me Down (feat. Khalid) – Sabrina Claudio – sexy slow jam – B-

Chanel (feat. Swae Lee & Pharrell) – Slim Jxmmi – When is a Rae Srummurd song not one? Well, here is one place. Not sure why they released it as a solo effort – C+

Faceshopping – SOPHIE – Art rap dream track, very strange, moody and different all angles and weirdness – B+

Thinkin – Spiff TV – This us reggaeton featuring Bad Bunny and with Future the crossover concept – B

Shake It Up – Demo – The Cars – Stripped down it is all about the beat held tight on guitar – B

Maybe – The Get Up Kids -My fave band from my short lived emo period are back, and this is a very clever little rocker (plus the singing is good) – B+

Princesa – TINI. Karol G – Latin pop dance track – B-

Close Enough for Jazz – Van Morrison, Joey DeFrancesco – Van wrote, Joey os all over the Hammond Organ – B+

Everyday I Have the Blues – Van Morrison, Joey DeFrancesco – Swinging old school… Joey takes Georgie Fame’s place – B+

You’re Driving Me Crazy – Van Morrison,  Joey DeFrancesco  – Nice horns, better Hammond, Van sounds relaxed and confident nailing the changes – B+

Something You Get Through – Willie Nelson – Lovely country ballad – B
