Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 4-21-17 – 4-27-17

Song For You – Avery Wilson – A Clive Davis find, which means he  over sings a lousy piano ballad till you want him to turn off the music and cry for the lost soul of Whitney  – D+

Hate That You Know Me – Bleachers – Perhaps it’s time for Jack to return to Fun., or become what he s built to be, third man on a seven song remix. Certainly any semblance of greatness circa “Rollercoaster” is done with  and like quite a few pop cool young wannabes treading between the real and the populist, this ain’t sustaining the dream – C

Attention – Charlie Puth – The kid can sing but his material is not up to – C

Gilligan – D.R.A.M – As in “lost just like…,” this is trap business as usual and could do with a bit more bounce in its step, but the hook hooks. Juicy J produced and A$AP Rocky took a verse – B

Legacy – Faith Evans – They dig up a Biggie verse, and Faith Evans -who at some time in the past 20 odd years should’ve remade herself as an r&b fixture, has a terrific vocal. The song is simply lousy – C+

Grandview – John Mellencamp, Martina McBride – the album ain’t bad but this Americana blues work out isn’t much – C

Faded Valentine – Justin Townes Earle – The man is a consistent country songwriter and this is a sublime little ditty and no more – B+

There Go A Fool – Justin Townes Earle – Not as bouncy but not bad, the song construction is odd and angular and doesn’t quite work – B

Lottery – Kid Ink – I was never a fan but this a very catchy slice of r&b with an excellent chorus and a smart bridge – B+

Lust For Life (feat The Weeknd) – Lana Del Rey – She has only one stance, half baked at sunrise, and Abel’s fully baked in the afternoon is a nice complement on this sweetly soggy burner – B

Mic Jack – Big Boi, Adam Levine – ho hum  from the beats into to the uninspired Outkaster to the business as usual Levine, a sodden piece of product – C-

That’s What I Like Remix (feat Gucci Mane) – Bruno Mars – Nice job, Gucci takes his verse at the top and it is fabulous – B+

Nights with You – Mo – That hook is dynamite (the “oh oh ohs” stuff) and this Danish half mainstream singer has been improving EDM for years, this is one of her own and one of her better ones -SINGLE OF THE WEEK –  B+

BDY ON ME – Omarion – Middling r&b for the ladies in the house – C+

Hard Times – Paramore – Three years ago Hayley introduced us to her resurrected  band anew and killed it with “Still Into You,” Today this turkey calypso song is gonna die on the vine just like Jacob warned ya – C-

Go Ahead – Perfume Genius – A sulky beat and mood music so moody it is ambient – C+

The Violence – Rise Against – Just awful rote rock crap. At first I thought it wasn’t loud enough, then I realized my volume was low, so I turned it up and it is a monstrously awful riff song though loud enough  – C-

East Atlanta Day – Zaytoven featuring Gucci Mane – This Atlanta producer has done as much as anyone to put trap on the map and while this lacks the contours and definition of great trap, it has the beat solidly in place and the hook is pretty darn good – B
