Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 3-24-18 – 3-30-18

Whistle – 4B, TEEZ – Clever EDM with a clever use of a whistle to nachor the beat – B-

Burn the House Down – AJR – NYC indie band more interested in beats than melody but with the art of arrangement down – C+

High – Alison Wonderland, Trippie Redd – Pretty good beats with Trippie sounding excellent at the start.

Insecure – Amara La Negra – nice neo-soul Latin pop mox – B

Born Under Punches – Angelique Kidjo – The Talking Heads song, with as stripped down a beat as you’ll ever hear – B+

Dead Soon – Autograf, Lils, Bonsai Mammal – Lovely serious song with a smart hook about the limitations of life – B

Honest – Bazzi – Blue eyed soul up to nothing much – C+

Dancehall President – Beenie Man – One of the dancehall greats is doing exactly what he always does… it is astonishing that he sounds the same, not aged at all. A terrific song… – A-

Rover 2.0 (feat. 21 Savage) – BlocBoy JB – State of the art with 21 Savage hitting as hard as ever and the riff on the automobile  and more affectionate to the boys life than girls – B

Love Me Still (feat. Jessie Reyez) – BLVK JVCK –  EDM duo given soul and then some by personal best ever Jessie Reqyez -she sounds fantastic – B+

Hope Lives – Bright City – Crappola Christian pop – C-

Invencible – ChocQuibTown – Good Latin pop, great singer and a nice excitable mix of guitar and electronic – B

Flames – David Guetta, Sia – Their fourth collaboration and a good one as well but far from “Titanium” -it sounds, dare I say it, laid back – B

Plastic Hambugers – Fantastic Negrito – Old school southern blues – B-

U&I (feat. Dia) – Flatbush Zombies – Part of that Pro Era squad, bland as hell – C

thoughts & prayers – grandson – Indie rock with a thought in its head and a rap influence on the verses,

Passing Clouds – Hiss Golden Messenger – Prince influenced beauty to benefit gun control – B-

Gettin’ Warmed Up – Jason Aldean – Jason said he wasn’t taking a side on gun control months after gun control took a side on him. This is a rotten country rocker – MUST TO AVOID – C-

In The Morning – Jay Prince – Smart old school rap track with a shaker full of beats – B

Somebody – Jim-E Stack – Lo fi club music bedsit catchiness – B

Symphony – Josh Groban – Overwrought lost love song – C

Pendiente de Usted – Justin Quiles – Low impact reggaeton, the rap is terrible – C

High Horse – Kacey Musgraves – modern country that sounds more like pure pop  – C+

Life in Pink – Kate Nash – Second terrific track from the eagerly awaited new album, it is a typical unique vision of her popstress mix of morbidity and mistakes – B+

Racks Like This – K CAMP, Moneybagg Yo – Nice MOR sample, like the Carpenters or something, for a little bit of war of the sexes, Moneybagg Yo brings it to life – C+

Coming Home – Keith Urban, Julia Michaels – Yes country, but country pop, sweet and cool with a heavily recycled lick – C+

Playinwitme (feat. Kehlani) – KYLE – You remember him from “iSpy!” and at the time we thought it was all Lil Yachty but this is a  lovely song with a great piano hook makes you wonder who rules what. Kehlani sounds lovely – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Creeping (feat. Rich the Kid) – Lil Skies – Strong love song, yeah you heard me – B+

Marc Scibilia – Over You – This ain’t country, it is mainstream singer songwriter pop and too much to bear – C

Differently – Marian Hill – Echoey beats and a hot vocal -what’s not to like? B

Matoma – Lonely (feat. MAX) – EDM pop song, nothing special though the vocalist sounds a but like Michael Buble! – C+

Lemon – Drake Remix – N.E.R.D – The ever popular Drake, saves a song that didn’t do it for me – B+

Louì – NVDES – This one man collective builds songs from details into a bleepy whole – C

About You – G Flip – One woman band who plays really sweet singer songwriter strokes – B

Rocket Man – Little Big Town – The harmonies are an interesting add to Elton’s famous song – C+

Bridges Burn – NEEDTOBREATHE – A real dog by the former CCM stalwarts -a huge disappointment – C

Say Amen (Saturday Night) – Panic! At The Disco – well, it sure ain’t “Crazy=Genius” -very average – C+

(Fuck A) Silver Lining – Panic! At The Disco – Sounds like Fall Out Boy – C+

Miento – Paty Canti, Jesse Baez – Mexico’s favorite daughter is their equivalent of a Halsey type, this is a goodie – B+

Hide – Rainbow Kitten Surprise – Weirdo beardo indieo boho – C+

Such A Simple Thing – Ray LaMontagne – A skillful ballad by a master of meh – B-

Caught Up In The Country – Rodney Atkins, The Fisk Jubilee Singers – Mainstream country, good singer as well – B

Diamonds Or Twine – Ryan Hurd – Another country writer becomes singer though the twined up guitars are sweet – C+

In My Blood – Shawn Mendes – This is a big song for the little tyke, a high emotional love song high wire with a smackerino of a chorus – B-

Pristine – Snail Mail – I vastly prefer these new women with a chip on their folkie shoulders over a single than an album, this is nearly five minutes of nonstop emotional disturbance – B+

Don’t Give In – Snow Patrol – Have aI already chosen a must to avoid? Surely not… – C-

Nothing Scares Me Anymore – Steve Angello, Sam Martin – Martin is a hack and Angello never got over Swedish House Mafia – C
