Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 2-24-17 – 3-2-17

Somethin’ I’m Good At – Brett Eldridge – When a song starts with a shout out of “Get ready to go crazy right here,” you’d be excused for rolling your eyes so far back in your head they drop outta your neck, but this is a surprisingly satisfying  country party track – A-

Lost In You – Bush – I feel kinda sorry for the guy, his love life is an open book and it is all smudged. Still, this ballad is inexcusable – D+

Slide – Calvin Harris, Frank Ocean, Migos – A nice mix of artists so why is the only person you can actually hear Frank Ocean? – B+

Subeme La Radio – Enrique Iglesias – This ain’t reggaeton, this is straight up no chaser salsa and the better for it – B+

First Fuck -6lack, Jhene Aiko – It sounds like Trey Songz meets Drake – C+

Make Love – Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj – Nicki’s best verse in two years meets Gucci’s not best rap in two years. So Nicki carries it and it is enough – A-

Swalla – Jason Derulo featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign – Not to mention Ol’ Dirty Bastard, from whom they stole the hook. And stealing ODB hook is one thing, but using it to such terrific results? That’s awesome – A-

Grandview – John Mellencamp, Martina McBride – Blues rocker – B

American Teen – Khalid – I enjoyed his single last year and I like this a lot as well, great American r&bish arrangement and Khalod’s voice is all feeling – B+

Chasing colors – Marshmello featuring Noah Cyrus – Marshmello is a talented guy who keeps to the basic EDM concepts and then tweaks em, this sounds like 1983 except it doesn’t. Noah is a little nondescript but assume that’s her job – B

I’m A Lady – Meghan Trainor – From the upcoming Smurfs movie (I know, but at least it’s not Katy Perry), it isn’t bad EDM pop for the chillums – B-

My Brave Face Demo – Paul McCartney And Elvis Costello – A great song always and what this adds is the harmonies on the verses and the voice isn’t mied, the wy it is on the album, so you can really hear how their voices work together. Lennon doesn’t hover quite, but he really does – A-

Let You Down – Seether – I’m sorry, but shouldn’t this be a little better at this point in their career? – C

By Your Side – The 1975 – 80s style rock pop ballad and nothing more – C+

This Is The World Of The Theatre – The New Pornographers – Blah 00s style indie rocker – C

Hold On, I’m Coming – Tom Jones – Sam and Dave classic and Tom sings its guts out – B+

Playboy – Trey Songz – Too much autotune but even so, very catchy track – B

Stay (with Alsessia Cara) – Zedd – Bland as can be EDM pop track – C
