Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 2-10-17 – 2-16-17

I Love You – Axwell – “Bittersweet Symphony” sampled by the former Swedish Mafia character, and here is the second law of thermodynamics in action: “it’s a bittersweet symphony then you die” to “I love you though I don’t like you right now”. – C

River In The Rain – Alison Krauss – The Roger Miller song off the Tom Sawyer “Big River” musical is the highlight of her superb upcoming country ballads album. A heartrending beauty of a song that does it justice and then some. I prefer it to the original… though only just. Sadly, I forgot about the Encores production that ended yesterday  – A

Mad Love – Bush – The voice is pure Gavin and the mood not atypical, so of course it isn’t very good. Though on the positive side of the ledger it can’t do much worse than Gwen’s last disaster. Catchy chorus – C+

I Got You – Acoustic – Bebe Rexha – Rests hard on a hand picked bass – C

Love Is Mystical – Cold War Kids – Unbelievably enough, worse than the song title – D+

Outlet – Desiigner – Same DNA as “Panda” but not half as good – C+

Flip Phone – Fetty Wap – Come in Fetty, you lazy fuck, your fifteen minutes are up – C

Shape Of You – Galantis Remix – Ed Sheeran – Nice job Galantis, it doesn’t get in the way, just adds some sound effects and fresh beats – B+

Ain’t Nothing – Juicy J, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign – What is it with Ty? Can’t he stay away from genic hip hop pop? Is the money too good? – C

More Girls Like You – Kip Moore – Terribly average country but at least it is not a total insult – C+

We Went To The Beach – Little Big Town – I can’t, I just can’t… – C

Chained To The Rhythm – Katy Perry, Skip Marley – Skip? This is a little too average, at some place in the song Katy needs to prove she isn’t Ellie Goulding and this doesn’t do… should be a hit, of course – B-

It Takes Two – Mike Will Made-It , Lil Yachty, Carly Rae Jepsen -Yep, that “It Takes Two” – C+

Don’t Kill My Vibe – Sigrid  – Kill her fucking vibe before I do – D+

Lions – Skip Marley – Another generation of talentless Marley scions – D

Big For Your Boots – Stormzy – Storming putting the boots all threat and council flats – A-

Firetruck – Vice, Sage The Gemini – Finally, a really fresh sample… this is very catchy track mixes  Major Lazer dub sound with Skrillex plus trap sample… it’s got everything! – B

Handle Ya Business – Wiley – New material already! Awesome track about how to deal with the business world – B+
