Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 11-18-22 – 11-24-22

Gang’Nem – Ab-Soul, Fre$H – of the Black Hippy posse, and including the other three members (Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q) Ab-Soul’s deeply felt West Coast bummers fit very nicely indeed and over the year he has been a little quiet but when he does come out it as major as this meld of street and extreme arrangement – B+

YAH Know – Chance the Rapper, King Promise -overuses the Whitney Houston sample, I mean seriously guys – C

It’s Giving Christmas – Chris Brown – did you see how the Grammy’s cancelled Chris Brown’s Michael Jackson tribute? Can they cancel his Christmas cancel while he’s at it – C+

Pistol – Cigarettes After Sex – we haven’t heard from em since 2019 though this somber indie ballad hasn’t lost much – B-

Do It Right – Don Toliver – the friend of rappers everywhere, r&b singer does a suitably 2022 cover of the SOS Band’s “Take Your Time (Do It Right)” as a fine and catchy r&b soul track – B+

Magnificent Hurt – Remix – Elvis Costello, chelmico, The Imposters – Elvis hands the reigns to the J-Rap duo chelmico who are credible to a degree on an odd re-imagining – B-

Never Been To Spain – Live at Richmond Coliseum, Richmond, VA – April 10, 1972 – Elvis Presley – The day before he was set to go back on tour Presley died in 1977 -five years after the 1972 tour where he recorded his excellent take on the Three Dog Night classic which emerges as our Adult Oriented Rock – B+

spend the money (feat. Lil Uzi Vert) – Fousheé – hyper pop with a top of 2020s sound dreams Lil Uzi, Foushee co-wrote the Steve Lacey smash – B+

Letter to Takeoff – Gucci Mane – a memento mori for the last Migos, which features Gucci wandering around near the place Takeoff is buried and the music by producer Zaytoven is funereal in its sad lethargy, the trap beats drag the song to a near halt and Gucci has never sounded realer or more important – A

CAIRO – KAROL G, Ovy On The Drums – the Colombian singer with a straightforward Latin pop take with brittle and taking beats – B-

Since U Been Gone – Juliet’s Version – Kelly Clarkson, Lorna Courtney – I’ve been waiting for the prices ($200 for nosebleeds during some performances) for Max Martin’s attempt at a Broadway Musical, a retelling wherein Juliet doesn’t kill herself but rather performs Max Martin’s greatest hits in “@Juliet” -the performance of “Since U Been Gone” is nothing special featuring original performer Kelly Clarkson plus Broadway’s Capulet played by Lorna Courtney – B-

Must Be Santa – Spotify Singles Holiday – Kurt Vile – kudos for a tremendous take with a gorgeous acoustic solo and a sort of nodded out but excellent attempt, Santa fans who also have drug problems should love it – B+

Buying All Black (feat. Flo Milli & PJ) – Ludacris – I saw Ludacris opening for Outkast circa Stankanoia and with a difficult assignment even for Ludacris kept us enthralled as he does herre with Flo’s rapping making an excellent counter point – A-

Planet Scorpio (Ghost Stories Remix) – Miss Cherry Delight – if 2019 was the year of the Latin pop explosion, 2022 has found the transgendered Kim Petras at the top of the charts with a straight ahead disco hook mastery with Sam Smith. Miss Cherry Delight on this re-imagination drives us straight to industrial house with a shaking beat – B+

Tukoh Taka – Official FFF Anthem – FIFA Sound, Maluma, Myriam Fares, Nicki Minaj – delightfully addictive hook and plenty of Latin pop… and Nicki! – B

Down In Atlanta – Pharrell Williams, Travis Scott – we’ve been patiently awaiting the return of Scott… but this ain’t that – C-

Kid On Christmas (feat. Meghan Trainor) – Pentatonix – this is… I can’t – MUST TO AVOID – D

Do you miss me? – PinkPantheress – love her voice, like Flo Milli without the helium OD – B-

Keep Me Dry – Quando Rondo, YoungBoy Never Broke Again – trap beats under straight up r&b plus two rappers – B-

Twin (feat. Lil Durk) – Roddy Ricch – Southern rap via Compton from the stylish rapper with Lil Durk on the assist – B

DON’T SAY NOTHIN’ – Saweetie – she can really rap and she is very sexy and aggressive, don’t say nothin’ because her pussy is in your mouth – B+

M4U – The Rocket Summer – a friend of mine loved him but she is no longer my friend and I lost track of Bryce, there was an album in 2019 but this doesn’t do much for the indie rocker mainstreamer – C

Drummer Boy – Titus Andronicus – For some reason best known to himself, Patrick Stickles shares verses of this lyrical rewrite for Billy Joel’s dreaded “Piano Man” on “Drummer Boy” and Titus Andronicus perform it with a straight face and a Christmas cheerfulness that takes full advantage of Joel’s rhyming schemes. Somebody claimed it sounds like the Pogues, of course on a memorable St Patty’s in 2011 where Patrick opened for The Pogues and dissed them and warned the audience not to drink too much… the mind boggles (here) – B+

Get Away – Young Dolph – is it back luck or bad lifestyle? Pop Smoke, XXXtentacion, Juice WRLD and just last year the brilliant Atlanta trap guy Young Dolph were murdered. A real loss and the cool, hard rapping is a first rate release; there is an album on the way – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-
