Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 10-27-17 – 11-2-17

All Fall Down – Alan Walker, Noah Cyrus – Influenced by Avicii up the ying yank but it works very well and the chorus is borderline plagiarism – B

Up in this – blackbear, timashe – Dressed in pink, blackbear is the poster child for emo-r&b, and to terrific effect on this soul charged song – B

Diane – Cam – You know Jolene, now meet Diane – C+

Beat The Track – Carl Cox, Nile Rodgers – Nile adds snaky steely guitar lines to Carl’s phut phut beats – C+

I Miss You (featuring Julia Michaels) – Clean bandit – This is one of the most consistent hitmaking EDM popsters of the 2010s, Julia is a gifted songwriter, this falls a little flat – C

So Tied Up – Cold War Kids, BishopBriggs – Worst band ever goes electronic – MUST TO AVOID – D

Reckless Love – Cory Asbury – CCM sucker singer songwriter – D+

Take Her Place – Don Diablo, ARIZONA – A brutal snoozer Americana – C

Postcard – First Aid Kit – Countryish tune, not up to “It’s A Shame” but not bad – B

Trouble – Five finger Death Punch – When I saw em at Prudential five years ago I considered them fresh though they weren’t, but in this All Pigs Must Die moment, this is slack – C

Hearts On Fire – Gavin James – he was go great opening for Niall Horan the other day you expect him to break through any minute now, the voice can do it but the song… hooky but wea in the tune department – B-

Greatest Show On Earth – Kid Rock – The worst Lynrd Skynrd cover band ever – C

Never let you Go – Kygo, John Newman – Just bland as tepid tea with sugar EDM pop – C-

Astronaut (Something About Your Love) – Mansionair – Soft cell soul from Australia boy band – C+

Motorsport – Migos, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B – Cardi B’s follow is a verve on her boyfriend’s new single, to her credit Nicki doesn’t blow her out – B

Lemon – N.E.R.D., Rihanna – Everything old is new again, and this is super new mostly because the beats are unlike anything out there this minute. The song isn’t much but Rihanna is Rihanna – B

Por Favor – Pitbull, Fifth Harmony – This is pretty good modern Latin American salsa beats plus harmonies – B

Open Arms – PRETTYMUCH – Simon Cowell’s attempt to mix One Direction with N’SYNC… with limited success – C+

Boom Boom – RedOne, daddy Yankee – RedOne was behind Gaga’s The Fame, and he might be a little late for Latin Trap, this is more Reggaeton anyway. Daddy Yankee adds credibility – B

Lift you Up – Ryan Stevenson – Buddies with TobyMac and the Newsboy, this adds a drum machine to the CCM – C+

Burning – Sam Smith – I’m not feeling this guy at all any more, one slow burn sob story too far – C+

Ready Yet – Sasha Sloan – Dance noir – B-

Wolves – Selena Gomez, Marshmello – Both singer and producer have had a good year but you’d be hard pressed to prove it based upon this Avicii ordinaire – C

Oh I – The Game, Jeremih, Young Thug – The song is really good, I haven’t heard Jeremoh this strong in a year, but The game seems hijacked on his own track – B-

Look At Your Hands – Tune-Yards – Same what you will about her, she doesn’t sound like anyone else out there, the loop has gone but the sound is fresher even as it reverts back to an 80s soul vibe, everything is so electronically messed, including the vocal and especially a late bridge which is quite eccentrically wonderful, that it seems to sound all the more human – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – B+
