Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 10-20-17 – 10-26-17

The Older I Get – Alan Jackson – Terrific 90s star has a downbeat beauty on the joys of aging country tranger – B+

The Doomed – A Perfect Circle – Ghastly Goth rocker s add Chris Cornell to Nine Inch nails – MUST TO AVOID – C-

I Am Who I Am – Baka Not Nice – Excon and Drake friend uses deep beats for a hypnotic hook track self-portrait – B-

Aux Cord – Big K.R.I.T. – He gets out his old r&b albums and tributes them while the chorus could be lifted from any one at all (“your love is taking me higher”!) – B

bright pink tims (feat. Cam’ron) – blackbear –  Better than “Playboy Shit,” though if only because of Cam’Ron’s. It is a catchy pop song as trap hip hop about…. wearing pink  – B

Ring-a-Ring O’ Roses – Charlotte Gainsbourg – co-written with Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, this is a post-modern ballad with the verses sung in French – Not bad, but Beck did a better job with Charlotte – B

Only 4 Me – Chris Brown, Ty Dolla $ign – Echoey, autotuned snore, but can you dance to it? No – C+

Millionaire – Chris Stapleton – His wife Morgane joins him in the chorus for this cliche ridden, apparently his woman has eyes that shine, written by Kevin Walsh, which means the turkey actually went out and found it – C-

Mamita – CNCO – Bachata bore – C

Spar (feat. 6LACK & Kodak Black) – Dreezy – Pretty good dark trap, my problem is that it is Dreezy’s song and she is better than her featured performers, but feels like a guest – B

Franz Ferdinand – Always Ascending – Starts as a lo-fi bedsit song and morphs into house music behind a hard rocker – B-

No No No – G4SHI – With some dancehall vibes in the chorus, this is all about the hook just for a change up – C+

I Won’t Back Down – Live from Saturday Night Live – Jason Aldean – Nothing much cover – C

Christmas Eve – Kelly Clarkson – First rate new Christmas single, shallow and exciting forms of Xmas come to life and Kelly nails it coming towards you – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A

Meaning of Life – Kelly Clarkson – The best MOR around. a full blown ballad worthy of Adele – B+

Miss Me More – Kelsea Ballerini – Blah country blues – C

Kids in Love – Kygo. The Night Game – Piano ballad by Aussie EDM guy who always wanted to be Sting – C+

Dulce – Leslie Grace, Wisin – Wisin raps! A real good one as well, and the song is a very lively piece of Latin pop – A-

The Star – Mariah Carey – She can stick pack punch on this Christmas song from the birth of Jesus (yes, that star) – C+

Whiskey (feat. A$AP Rocky) – Maroon 5 – The best off the upcoming album, none of which have charted so far, this isn’t bad and Rocky can always rap a verse – B-

You & Me – Marshmello – The EDM DJ is always big on the pop charts, this one is a horn laden triumph of sweetness – B

Little Dark Age – MGMT – This duo is terrible live, which makes them a studio creation, and this is a creatively interesting art-pop electronic studio creation – B-

I Wish You Lonely – Morrissey – He can write a lyric and nail a misanthropic thought to the wall, but he hasn’t written a memorable tune since 2006. The good news, is I’ve heard a couple that are up to scratch at his BBC6 gig, the bad news is this certainly isn’t one of them – C+

Backstage – OverDoz. Miguel – Catchy  rap about groupies… the timing could be better – B-

Anywhere – Rita Ora – What’s she famous for again? – C+

Wolves – Selena Gomez, Marshmello – Selena sounds great, terrific vocal, pretty excellent beat from dealer Marshmello – B+

Here We Come – Sleater-Kinney – Hard rocking, angular circa Dig Me Out SK, dramatic, loud, toxic weird energy – B+

Neither Do I – Stwo, Jeremih – Sex jam snooze – C

Wallowa Lake Monster – Sufjan Stevens – Freud would have a field day with this cat, this outtake from Carrie And Lowell is a masterpiece of melancholy and sorrow that should have made it onto the album. And if you think this is easy, why has Stevens never come close to this level of songwriting before or since. – A

Gorgeous – Taylor Swift – A terrific new song off the eagerly anticipated all or nothing album, Taylor pines the way she pined on “You Belong With Me,” and, no, the gift hasn’t flown, but she is in a different place now and the empahy strta has been levelled – A-

Break First – Tim McGraw, Faith Hill – On theory, sure, if not Vince and Amy then Tim and Faith. In practise, there hit to misses level is horrendous. I had a ticket to see em live and put together a playlist of the tracks they are playing and I just plain couldn’t go. This one is actually not bad, so could a pretty country ballad – B

Don’t Judge Me (feat. Future and Swae Lee) – Ty Dolla $ign – State of the art r&b, gorgeous, arty, tempo wonky, brilliance – A-

Happy Hour – Weezer – I read the Times review, wow – C-
