Going Steady: New Singles Released 4-7-23 – 4-13-23

The Boy With a Smile – Arthur Russell – I hadn’t known that the late Russell was the curator at The Kitchen, I’m surprised I never met the everyman and cellist master. There has been plenty of unreleased tracks including this lo fi weirdness from the early 80s – B+

Quarters – Conway the Machine – a rap pro for sure, who can float through bar after bar with one stunning rhyme after another – B+

Baby Don’t Hurt Me – David Guetta, Anne-Marie, Coi Leray – the French DJ-Producer had a great 2010s, 2020s he is only sure of hits in the UK, on the plus side you can dance to it – C+

Search & Rescue – Drake – Drake messes with Ye’s head, not a particularly difficult thing to do, by addinging a Kim Kardashian sample (and a photoshopped pix on the sleeve) as Drake takes a click track and autotune on a well rhymed if minor song in search of true love – B+

Dreaming Out Loud [Feat. Ivan Neville, Ruthie Foster] – Gov’t Mule – Warren wrote it, a bluesy, political snooze, Ruthie kills her verse – C+

Meeting The Master – Greta Van Fleet – they will never be more than Led Zep Lite but what was a sin in 1987 is a miracle in 2023 on a great Zep fairie tale of melodious eastern promise and backwards tapes and then it kicks in – B+

They Wait – Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit – from his Reunions album, and better than most of the songs on that dreaded album, this isn’t country or Americana, it is classic rock with a side of Tom Petty – B+

Fallin’ – Joey Bada$$ – a droney vocal and everything that made Pro Era the era to live in gone, a slow r&b burner – C

Waffle House – Jonas Brothers – sounds like jump for their love – B

Blackout – Joyner Lucas, Future – Joyner sounds furious, Future sounds like he is slurping nyquil – B

4EVA (feat. Pharrell Williams) – KAYTRAMINÉ, KAYTRANADA, Amine – a super mash up and Pharrell adds a backing track that sounds just like Pharrell – C+

Never Felt So Alone – Labrinth – electronic dance bands produced by Finneas and adding his sister – B-

One Step Closer (Theme Song from the Apple Original Series “Jane”) – Leona Lewis -The X Factor star who had some of her thunder taken by Adele, they both have great voices, returns with a movie track though we haven’t had an album in eight years. It ain’t much but it ain’t nothing – B-

New York Comeback – Lucinda William – You’re gonna love this one, Lucinda gargling marbles, Springsteen adding backing vocals before harmonizing and an addictive classic rock sound, Jesse Malin got a co-writing credit – B+

Little Dogs – Mudhoney – the stalwarts of the 90s is still here with atonal post punk shards of guitar cutting it up – B

Everybody Needs Someone (feat. Vance Joy) – Noah Cyrus – lovely Americana with a steel trap melody – B+

Can’t Outrun The Truth – Pete Townshend – Pete has always been a first rate solo artist, his earlier greatest hits Coolwalkingsmoothtalkingstraightsmoking: Best of, is a masterpiece of collecting extant songs, “Rough Boys”, “Let my love open the door” “, “Misunderstood”; “Give blood ; “A friend is a friend”… “Sheraton Gibson” is a brilliant piece of work and self realisation with a kill for it hook “sitting in the Sheraton Gibson playing my Gibson…” and while there is another and longer hits Truancy, this one, not available on streaming services, will make do. This song, written in aid of teenage cancer by his significant other Rachel Fuller and a steel guitar beauty and as an added plus if you watch the conversation between the couple it is certainly an interesting snapshot (it is fun to imagine Pete’s relief at having to cancel his 2020 US tour) – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Older ft Jimmie Allen & Dixie D’Amelio – Steve Aoki – Bland country dance mash up with an immensely irritating clap track – D+

I Want It All – The Drums – Jonathan Pierce could have broken through but he fired the members of the band and couldn’t do it alone despite writing the songs -this ain’t much – C-

WTF (feat. Nicki Minaj) – Youngboy Never Broke Again – And not very young either – C+
