Love Is Letting Go (feat. Diane Keaton) – Ashe – L.A. songstress Ashe wrote this gorgeous, acoustic ballad for her late brother, who died of an overdose, and learning that Diane Keaton also lost her brother, Ashe asked her to harmonize and it worked so wonderfully and sadly -as tender a song as you will ever hear – A-

No Limit – Channel Tres – the “Brilliant Nigga” with an r&b winner – B

Big Man Riddim (Kanipe) (feat. Burna Boy & Runtown) – DJ Xhela – DJ Xhela is the Nigerian DJ and he is great, on “Big Man Riddem” he finds the intersection of afrobeat and dancehall with Burna Boy along for the ride – A-

BACH TO BACH (with Dave East) – Fabolous – through the past with a trap beat and both East and Fabolous rapping as great as you might well hope – B+

Dark Hearted – Freddie Gibbs – OG Freddie leading up to Friday’s new album has murder on his mind – B

Time – From the Motion Picture “Amsterdam” – Giveon at his most soulful, Taylor Swift is in the movie, Drake got a co-write credit – B

Tomorrow 2 (with Cardi B) – Glorilla – Glorilla is the excellent feminist rapper from Tennessee, Cardi B can rap circles around anybody in the business – B

saddest soundtrack – iann dior – gorgeous bummer by an indie guy who is still coming into his own… smells like Travis Barker had a hand in it – B+

KILL ME – Jamie XX – this has been Oliver Sim’s year despite canceling his tour but Jamie roars back with a fine single – B+

Sweet Symphony (with Chris Stapleton)- Joy Oladokun -wow, the bedsitland home alone Joy can really compose a song and the proof is that Stapleton joined her on this soulful beauty – A-

Satellite – Khalid – ugh, whistling, ugh ugh… Khalid has the voice but the song is beyond predictable – B-

Willing To Trust (with Ty Dolla $ign) – Kid Cudi – Cudi finds love, I bet he pays for it – C+

STAR WALKIN’ (League of Legends Worlds Anthem) – Lil Nas X – LNX is now the President of the gamer Legends Worlds and provides his worse song to date, a terrible r&b MOR dross, a real bad one – D+

Big City Life – Luude. Mattafix – a big time remix of the Mayyafix hit – B+

Koo Koo Fun (feat. Tiwa Savage & DJ Maphorisa) – Major Lazer, Diplo, Major League Djz – terrific afrobeat and addictive hook – B

I’m Not Dead Yet – Mike Posner – Posner is an odd case, a DJ who was big, lost his base, and returned as a one hit wonder and back on the DJ circuit – C

Use To Be The Playa (feat. Snoop Dogg) – Morris Day – Over a terrific groove, Morris and Snoop take the metaphor (basketball playa) as far as it goes with Snoop rapping between and around Morris’s singing. It is a real thrill and if it doesn’t make your life it should surely make your day – A-

Eddie – Red Hot Chili Peppers – typical RHCP ballad – C

Brown Liquor – Robin Thicke, Yo Gotti – Yo steals the ode to hard liquor – C+

Unholy (feat. Kim Petras) – Sam Smith – Kim Petras is the impressive transgender pop star and Sam Smith is Sam Smith of that voice not working it here and they get together on an ode to promiscuity and children is an electronic anthem unlike anything we’ve heard from Sam ever – B

Nothing Even Matters – SiR – it takes a village to compose this r&b meets trap beats track – B

Mel Made Me Do It – Stormzy – did you see Stormzy at Global Citizen from Ghana on Saturday? a brilliant performance and this was the highlight, a long (seven minutes plus) rap with booming afrobeats and low key samples on a tribute to black British excellence (and Stormzy’s personal stylist Melissa’s Wardrobe) – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

All I Need To Hear – The 1975 – fucking Jack Antonoff co-produced this worst song by Matt EVER, piano AOR track – C-

Beguiled – The Smashing Pumpkins -the lead off single from The Smashing Pumpkins upcoming new album Atum: A Rock Opera In Three Acts billed as a sequel to Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness… so you’ll know what to do – C-

Heartaches – Toosii – Toosii has been breaking thru since his feature on Lil Tjay’s smash hit “Love Hurts” and you can hear what Toosii had brought, a bone deep melodicism and a restrained beauty on a great song – A-
