Going Steady: New Singles 9-22-23 – 9-28-23 Reviewed

Candy Pop – AWOLNATION -so completely pop that Aaron Bruno comes across as a novelty -an electronic one – B+

Modern Girl – Bleachers – a marching anthem to nowhere and while quite good that scream is so fake it threw me right out of the song – B

ONE MORE TIME – blink-182 – of course growing up is a drag but this is the cheeky guys from “What’s My Age Again” and this is a slow bore – C-

MORE THAN YOU KNOW – blink-182 – so here they rock like a rocking horse that isn’t rocking – C+

Learning To Fly – Christina Aguilera – a bummer track slow as molasses just there for Christina to swoop in here and there – C+

BLACK MOONLIGHT – Duran Duran – trap-y and metallic high hats make it a dance winner – B

Always On My Mind – Eric Clapton, Bradley Walker – the solo is quite sweet though Eric is just about cancelled by now – C+

Lethal – Frost Children – with one of the best albums of the year already to their name, the hyper-pop duo adds an invigorating guitar solo on the bridge – A-

There’s No Mountain – Glen Hansard – with the wrong song the Irish- Americana cat is somewhere that love can’t find him, and this is the wrong song for the emoter – C-

Into Your Room – Holly Humberstone- a credible UK sad girl who was quite on par with Olivia Rodrigo when I saw em at Radio City circa the stupendous ” Please Don’t Leave Just Yet”; since then the build up to the sophomore album has been full of mediocrities like this – B-

NO SZNS – Jean Dawson, SZA – SZA is on the new Drake (her under the radar ex) and has a hit but this is an excellent r&b soul song with Jean making a name for himself and SZA stealing it – A-

Somewhere – Johnny Marr – lead off to upcoming greatest hits and a ringing guitar beauty – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Love You Back – Lady A – “you can love a memory but a memory can’t love you back” – B-

If I Was Live at Wembley Arena, 23/12/1985 – Midge Ure – he wrote “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and if you can forgive him for that, he was behind “Vienna” and this relatively catchy piece of work – B

Daysleeper – Live At The Palace / 1999 – R.E.M. – it is the 25th Anniversary of Up – the follow-up to four masterpieces (must we? Out oF Time, Automatic For The People, Monster, New Adventures In Hi Fi) and with their drummer recovering from a brain aneurysm, the three constructed a tedious set of the usual mood and electronics. This is a pretty song though – B

El Jefe – Shakira, Fuerza Regida – regional Mexican meets Colombian- Lebanese superstar on her way to prison for tax evasion – B

Come On Heartaches – The Menzingers – a superior slice of old school rock – B+

Got Me Started – Troye Sivan – after the triumphant man on man “Rush” -a Padam Padam for the people, here he seems to lose his way on a draggy pop track – B

Why We Had to Leave – Yair Elazar Glotman, Arca – Arca is the single most gifted musician of the 2020s and Yair is a German classical composer and they come together on a brooding beauty of the first order – A-
