Going Steady: New Singles 9-1-23 – 9-7-23 Reviewed

Baddadan (feat. IRAH, Flowdan, Trigga & Takura) – Chase & Status – EDM computer based with a killer hook – B

Nun – Devendra Banhart – Cate Le Bon gets a co write credit and this is closer to Americana than the goth roots – B

Demons – Doja Cat – after channelling Dionne Warwick on her last single, a chart hit, she goes for a metallic computer sourced beats on beats on what will not join it on top though the cash cow is doing a trap wire balancing act superior to “Paint The Town Red – B+

DANSE MACABRE – Duran Duran – their first release of the year is not helped by Simon’s milquetoast vocals but that’s all you can say negative about this first rate EDM – A-

Vertigo – Griff – singer songwriter confessional with a strong sense of rhythm from the Jamaican-Chinese woman – B-

I Used To Be in Love – YAME Remix – Jake Shears – the former Scissor Sister hasn’t done all that solo and though this is a clever disco diva track I am not certain who will notice – B

Tension – Kylie Minogue – “Padam Padam” had the song of the summer written all over although we ended up having a medium (the arena tour) of the summer instead. This sounds like Clare Grogan, a wooohy girlishness – B+

Kat Food – Lil Wayne – from the upcoming Tha Carter VI, a perfect little monster of sex, drugs and AK-47’s and… well I guess cunnilungus should just go under sex; it promises swell stuff – A-

Portions For Foxes – Lydia Loveless, Jason Hawk Harris – “COME HERE”! if Lydia is gonna cover Rilo Kiley this is the song to choose though she doesn’t add much – B

Sex and Money – Lydia Loveless – not untypical Lydia pussy country tock – B-

Last Time I Saw You – Nicki Minaj – Nicki with a straight-up low key r&b song – B

Love Can Heal – Bright-Side Mix – Peter Gabriel – Dreary, electronic bland out – C

Come See Me – Rod Wave – the follow up to the gorgeous “Call Your Friends” -one of his best songs which also happened to stiff. This isn’t as good but it is pretty great modern r&b – B+

Money – Roger Waters well, he wrote it and if he wants to indulge himself with a dreary and goth take, so be it – C+

Time – Roger Waters – as above only the spoken word makes it worse – C-

Only – Sampha – he has a gorgeous voice and melodies that trip over themselves to reach you through modern pop tropes – B+

Keep Going Up (with Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake) – Timbaland – ESPN Monday night football new theme is a hit of nostalgia and equally, a huge disappointment – C+

Angry – The Rolling Stones – we have had one freshly minted Stones song since A Bigger Bang, a bad album, and a lesson they have failed to learn from on this A.I.ish Stones by any other means; a pitiful excursion into branding from Keef’s opening guitar lick to Mick’s rough and ready vocals, it is a a self-evident and absolute disaster – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – D+
